Dr. Gouge, a retired nephrologist, has enjoyed a distinguished career marked by significant contributions to the medical field. His expertise in nephrology, hypertension and chronic kidney disease has been honed by decades of dedicated practice and leadership. Dr. Gouge's most recent role was as a nephrologist at San Antonio Kidney from 2003 to 2020, where he provided specialized care to patients with complex renal conditions, solidifying his reputation as a leading expert in his field.

Before his tenure at San Antonio Kidney, Dr. Gouge was the Director of the Directorate of Combat and Doctrine Development at the U.S. Army Medical Center of Excellence from 2001 to 2003. Before transitioning into the civil sector, he had garnered an extensive military career, serving in various capacities between 1979 and 2004, most recently as Deputy Commander for Clinical Services for the 1st Medical Brigade, and Deputy Surgeon for Combined Joint Task Force 7 in Iraq. Notably, Dr. Gouge commanded the 86th Combat Support Hospital from 1998 to 2000, which deployed to El Salvador for Hurricane Mitch Relief; and the 212th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital from 1995 to 1997, which deployed to Croatia and Bosnia for a year. As Division Surgeon, 3rd Infantry Division in Germany he deployed for training exercises to Russia and Ukraine with their respective militaries. In 1990 he deployed to Saudi Arabia and subsequently into Iraq where he provided internal medicine and combat casualty care to US and Coalition service members and Iraqi Prisoners of War.

Highly educated, Dr. Gouge received a Bachelor's Degree in Zoology from Texas A&M University in 1974, a Doctor of Medicine in medicine from The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston in 1979 and a Master of Strategic Studies from the Army War College in 2001.

Dr. Gouge was elected a fellow of the American College of Physicians. In addition to his professional accomplishments, he has been actively involved in civic organizations. He has served on the board of directors for the South Texas Organ Bank and has supported initiatives with The Navigators, Focus on the Focus, Cru, and Children's Relief International.

Dr. Gouge's dedication to education was recognized when he was voted Best Teacher at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in 1988. His military service has also been honored with multiple awards, including the Legion of Merit and Bronze Star. These accolades reflect Dr. Gouge's commitment to excellence and leadership under challenging circumstances, such as his deployments for hurricane relief in Central America and combat operations during Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Attributing his success to his Christian faith, his wife, and various mentors who guided him throughout his career, Dr. Gouge also mentions his father, who instilled a strong work ethic. As he looks forward to future opportunities, he is considering writing a book about his many past experiences.
