Her most recent position was as a professor at Saint Joseph's College of Education for Women in Patchogue, New York, where she served from 1998 until retirement. Ms. Schatz Butterfield's tenure at the college spanned over two decades, during which she imparted her extensive knowledge and expertise to future educators.

Before teaching at the academic level, Ms. Schatz Butterfield was a reading teacher in the Patchogue-Medford School District from 1992 to 2013. Her work with students who faced challenges with dyslexia and were reading below their grade level was particularly impactful. Ms. Schatz Butterfield focused on equipping these students with the skills necessary to comprehend and engage with textbooks, leading to remarkable improvements in their classroom performance and grades. This experience defined her career and inspired her to share her effective teaching methods with other educators.

Between 2004 and 2013, Ms. Schatz Butterfield was a summer school principal for Patchogue-Medford School District's Reading Program. Her leadership during this period was marked by a commitment to improving management practices and ensuring that educational standards were upheld. Before becoming a principal, she taught at the Fire Island School District and Eastport South Manor Central School District from 1990 to 1992. She was a middle school reading specialist from 1992 until she retired in 2013.

Ms. Schatz Butterfield's academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in child study from Saint Joseph's University in New York in 1990. She furthered her education by earning a Master of Science in literacy from Dowling College in 1994. Additionally, she holds a certification as a dyslexic reading specialist from The College of Saint Rose in 2004.

Active in her professional community, Ms. Schatz Butterfield has been affiliated with the National Alliance on Mental Illness, reflecting her dedication to supporting mental health initiatives within educational settings. Earlier in her career, she served as the president of the Parent-Teacher Association at Medford Elementary School. Ms. Schatz Butterfield has also been actively involved in civic organizations as a sponsor for The Brain & Behavior Research Foundation and the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation Inc.

Throughout her career, Ms. Schatz Butterfield has received several accolades, including the New York State Award from a local school in the Long Island area and an Educator Reward for her contributions to education. Looking ahead, she plans to continue being a role model and supporting children, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a positive mindset. She also remains active in creative projects, such as "Dee's Tiny Treasures," which she has worked on since 2012.
