Previously, she was a manager at IBM from 1982 until 1998, during which time she also contributed to SEMATECH as a manufacturing manager between 1992 and 1994. Her tenure in these roles underscored her expertise in industrial process instrumentation and her ability to lead teams effectively.
Ms. Cole began her career in education as an adjunct professor of the French horn at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (commonly Virginia Tech) from 1971 to 1977. During this period, she played a pivotal role in developing the music department, leaving a lasting impact on its growth and success. Her early professional journey also included teaching in Bloomington Public Schools from 1962 until 1965, where she shared her passion for music with young students.
Laying a strong foundation for Ms. Cole's diverse career path was her educational background. After transferring from Northwestern University, where she studied under Philip Farkas, she earned a Bachelor of Music Education with specialization in the French horn from Indiana University Bloomington in 1962. The influence of her mother, who was an innovative educator herself, instilled in her a deep commitment to community service and education.
