Before working for Visionary, Mr. Markel headed Markel Technical Services, LLC in Pearland, Texas, for seven years, where he leveraged his extensive knowledge and consulted for seven different companies, providing innovative engineering solutions, testing, and qualification methods in oilfield downhole tools.
Mr. Markel's career in the industry began at Dresser Atlas, where he worked as a mechanical engineer from 1981 to 1988. He then joined Schlumberger (now SLB) as a senior mechanical engineer in 1988, where he remained until 2016. During his tenure, Mr. Markel developed several critical products that significantly contributed to the company's revenue growth.
Mr. Markel's most notable contributions include the industry-leading Enerjet product line and the High Pressure E-Fire system that generated record-breaking revenue for SLB on the Chevron Jack Well project in 2006. His exceptional performance also earned him stock options, underscoring his value to the organization and ensuring his retention amidst competitive offers from other companies.
Mr. Markel's educational background laid a strong foundation for his successful career. He earned a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering, magna cum laude, from West Virginia University in 1981 and a Master of Science in mechanical engineering from the University of Houston in 1992.
Throughout his career, Mr. Markel has been an active member of several influential industry-related organizations, such as the Society for Petroleum Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. These affiliations have allowed him to stay abreast of industry trends and contribute to advancing mechanical engineering practices.
Mr. Markel has been awarded fifteen patents over his 40-year career. In 2022, Mr. Markel acted as an expert witness in a major patent infringement lawsuit, testifying on behalf of fourteen defendants that decisively impacted a favorable outcome for the defendants.
