NEW YORK, NY, December 13, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Christopher Jerome Carter, MDiv, ThM, PhD, LP, NCPsyA, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Drawing on nearly 45 years of leadership experience across his chosen fields, Dr. Carter has distinguished himself through his work of providing mental healthcare, spiritual care, and education. A New York State-licensed psychoanalyst in private practice, he is nationally and internationally credentialed. He specializes in areas including development, emotional regulation, personality disorders, serious and persistent personality disorders, and embracing one's vocation ('calling') in day-to-day living.

Dr. Carter's calling to his life's work in mental healthcare was deeply shaped by early spiritual and practical experiences. His mother, Doris Jean Coleman Carter, died in his second semester of college (1985). Her death resulted in the dissolution of his immediate family. He was without a permanent place of residence (other than student lodging) until 1994. After serving as Assistant Chaplain for the Upper Room AIDS Ministry, Inc. (Harlem, 1992-1993), He turned his attention towards the fight against homelessness and nonprofit management. He designed, implemented evidence-based initiatives that provided housing and essential care to Greater New York's chronically homeless individuals and families coping with mental health challenges and physical disabilities. He developed a collaboration with licensed clinical social of the U. S. Veterans Administration in his role as Psychiatric Social Worker for Volunteers of America-Greater New York (2008), during which he enrolled 300 veterans into the VA Grant & Per Diem Program --- linking veterans into medical and mental health services --- before placing them into permanent housing --- a feat he completed within a brief nine-month tenure. This collaboration continued when he served as Program Director for Urban Pathways, Inc., supervising the construction and rent-up of a 43-unit, mixed-population supportive housing project in the Bronx, originally designated as housing for chronically homeless U.S. military veterans (2015-2016). His collaboration with the U. S. Veterans Administration continued in his duties as Senior Program Director of Saint Vincent's Hospital Westchester/Saint Joseph's Medical Center's Residential Services department (2016-2018). Throughout his career in New York, Dr. Carter has provided staff trainings on cultural competency, mental health diagnoses, and best practices.

Dr. Carter's work ethic is informed by his educational and practical experiences in the healthcare industry. Working with nonprofits in the Greater New York region (1992-2018), he effectively maximized the reach and efficiency of programs for the disadvantaged while simultaneously ensuring budgetary compliance with a focused alignment. An expert in guiding teams of mental health professionals, Dr. Carter earned a track record of success in managing multifaceted initiatives and achieving above-target results without losing empathy for the sacrifices that are often required of social workers and care coordinators. Focused largely upon the goal of ending the epidemic of chronic homelessness amongst people with enduring mental illnesses and U. S. military veterans, Dr. Carter is an expert in Low-Income Tax Credit Housing (LIHTC) regulations (2017), NYS Rent-Stabilized Housing regulations, and NYC Housing laws and regulations.

His teaching experiences include: Choral Director of M.S. 135 (NYC Board of Education; 1995- 1998), Adult Basic Education Teacher at Junior High School 22 (1997-1998), adjunct professor of Field Education at Columbia University/Union Theological Seminary (2008-2009), adjunct professor of Philosophy at The College of New Rochelle's Manhattan and Brooklyn campuses (2002-2003), and a guest lecturer for variety of professional venues.

Dr. Carter's comprehensive education extends over the course of nearly two decades. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in General Music and World Religions (dual concentration), with a minor in Spanish, at Denison University (1988), becoming the first in his nuclear family to earn a Bachelor of Arts. He continued to earn a Master of Divinity in Educational Psychology and Pastoral Psychology (dual concentration) as well as a Master of Theology in Pastoral Psychology, focusing on bereavement, through Princeton Theological Seminary (1992 and 1992, respectively). He earned a Master of Philosophy (2000) and a PhD (2008) in Psychiatry & Religion through Columbia University/Union Theological Seminary (New York), becoming one of the first African Americans to graduate from UTS's doctoral program in Psychiatry & Religion. In 2016, Dr. Carter embarked on a five-year psychoanalytic apprenticeship with the Jungian Psychoanalytic Association. Upon licensure (2021), he established his private practice - a goal that he first identified in his adolescence.

Dr. Carter's articles include: "Time for space at the table: an African American-Native American analyst-in-training's first-hand reflections. A call for the IAAP to publicly denounce (but not erase) the White supremacist writings of C. G. Jung" (2021), for which he is the recipient of the 2021 Gradiva Award. More recently, he published "The Current Role of Analytical Psychology in Maintaining Fictitious Boundaries that are Promoted through the Race Lie: a call to dismantle the virtual wall that exists through attitudes of white supremacy" (2024). Both articles were published in The Journal of Analytical Psychology. Dr. Carter co-edited and a contributed to his book, Jungian Reflections on Systemic Racism (Routledge, 2023), an in-depth, Jungian exploration into the foundations of ethnic bias in analytical psychology and in mental healthcare. Race is a dysfunctional, political economic concept that continues the systematization of ethnic biases. The continuous implementation of long-invalidated beliefs (race science) effectively serves the longevity of white supremacy, which Dr. Carter defines as an idealized identification with archetypal White, even in people who do not identify as white. Jungian Reflections on Systemic Racism is a vital resource for medical professionals, clinicians, social workers and psychoanalysts.

Long dedicated to civic advocacy, Dr. Carter began his mental health career as a peer advocate and as a member of the steering committee of the Community Health Education Council for Children and Adolescents (CHECCA) in his hometown, Springfield, MA (1982-1985), having been enrolled by his mother, who worked as a city clerk. He went on to serve as Administrative Assistant and then Interim Director of the Peer Education Program (PEP; Springfield, MA), working in the office of Western MA Legal Services (WMLS, 1983-1985). While participating in CHECCA and PEP, Dr. Carter received emotionally-attuned education through paralegal Cecilia Johnson (deceased), the former Springfield City Health Commissioner Jerry Mogul, and WMLS attorneys. CHECCA and PEP introduced Dr. Carter to the notion of best practices within social work. PEP and CHECCA leadership nominated him as an honored listee in Marquis Who's Who in 1985. His experience of working for CHECCA and PEP throughout his adolescence instilled many of the ethical values that Dr. Carter continues to employ in his private practice.

Dr. Carter is actively affiliated with several professional organizations, including the International Association of Analytical Psychologist (2021-), the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis (2021-), the Society for Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Psychology (American Psychological Association, Div. 39), the Philadelphia Association of Jungian Analysts (2024-) and Jungian Psychoanalytic Association (New York, 2021-). He is an editorial board member for The Journal of Poetry Therapy (Taylor & Francis, 2024-).

Dr. Carter is especially grateful for the kindhearted mentorship he received from Dr. James Loder, Dr. Donald Capps, Dr. James Lapsley, and Dr. Elizabeth Frykberg, along with others with whom he studied in Princeton. He also remains grateful for the eclectic mentoring he received from Dr. Ann Belford Ulanov and Dr. Harry Wells Fogarty while he studied at both Columbia University/Union Theological Seminary and Jungian Psychoanalytic Association. He is indebted to luminaries who have offered support and personal guidance through his graduate studies, including Toni Morrison (Princeton University), Albert J. Raboteau (Princeton University/PTS), Delores Williams, James Cone, James Washington, and rare but precious interactions with Cornell West (Columbia University/UTS). Their words of encouragement were fuel to Dr. Carter's perseverance in fulfilling his call.

In Dr. Carter's decades-long career, he has worked to comprehend and promote movement toward greater inclusion of marginalized populations in such ways that permit individuals to find their rightful places in society more fully. For the last six years, he has delved into and actively contributed to the development of analytical psychological theory. In the immediate future, he plans to continue to educate medical professionals and the general public about the implicit and explicit harms that are promoted and actualized through racializing attitudes and related behaviors. Given Dr. Carter's unique position as an eclectic Jungian Analyst with decades of mental health service experience, he is exceptionally positioned to make a positive global impact as he advances his work in psychoanalysis. His current work informs the collective about the persistent harms of biases in healthcare, with the goal of improving the living standards of marginalized individuals and families.
