Dr. Orazi's journey into medicine began in high school, where his fascination with the field led him to pursue MD training at the Universita degli Studi di Milano, where he graduated summa cum laude in 1979. His subsequent training as a hematologist in the United Kingdom began a lifelong dedication to the field. He furthered his expertise by obtaining a specialty diploma in anatomic pathology from the University of Pavia while working as a staff pathologist in Milan at the National Tumor Institute. His commitment to learning and excellence is evident in his second specialty diploma in clinical hematology at the University of Milan and his fellowship through the Royal College of Pathologists. After moving to the US in 1992, he obtained American Board of Pathology certification both in anatomic pathology and hematology.
Over the years, Dr. Orazi leveraged his considerable knowledge by his appointment to the faculty of prestigious academic institutions. After serving as a full professor and director of hematopathology at Columbia University in New York City and Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, he became vice-chair for hematopathology and fellowship program director at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City. Drawing on his clinical and academic background, Dr. Orazi excels as a professor and chair of the Department of Pathology at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, where he began his tenure in 2018.
Throughout his career, Dr. Orazi has authored multiple books and hundreds of articles in medical journals, covering topics such as leukemias and other myeloid neoplasms, lymphomas, and splenic disorders.
Driven to remain abreast of scientific and professional developments in the field, Dr. Orazi aligns himself with several organizations, including the Royal College of Pathologists, the Society for Hematopathology, and the European Bone Marrow Working Group, of which he was formerly a chairperson.
