DAVIS, CA, December 17, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Bob Comarow, a true Renaissance man, has left an indelible mark across diverse domains. His journey—from jazz stages to computer clusters—exemplifies excellence, innovation, resilience, and a passion for lifelong learning.
The Musical Prelude
Bob's musical odyssey began early. His mother, a literary enthusiast, introduced him to the 17-volume Golden Book Encyclopedia at the tender age of seven. That encyclopedic immersion sparked curiosity and laid the groundwork for his versatile background. Little did he know that this childhood knowledge would fuel his success in multiple fields.
In high school, Bob stepped onto professional stages, touring with the Jazz Fusion band, Entropy. Surrounded by musicians better than himself, he thrived. Interestingly, this "geeky" band comprised top science students from the East Coast—a delightful fusion of art and intellect.
Harmonizing Academia and Artistry
Bob's academic journey took him through Berklee College of Music and Columbia University. He read shows in the Borscht Belt, played club dates, and lent his guitar and upright bass skills to studio work. But it was at Columbia that he delved into the science of music education. His research revealed a truth: what we often label as "talent" can indeed be taught. Bob's ear and rhythm training programs paved the way for young musicians, igniting their passion within school and college music programs.
Computers, Education, and Grants
Columbia's computer system beckoned, and Bob answered the call. He recognized the untapped potential of computers in education. On the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, he introduced technology, computerized accounting systems, and secured over $800,000 in competitive grants. Music and educational psychology found a harmonious intersection at Black Hills State College.
From Notes to Nodes: The Systems Engineer
Bob's life took a fascinating turn. He raised a family, honed his computer expertise, and became the Manager of Academic Computer Services at Fordham. His dual role as an adjunct professor in computer science and programming set the stage for a remarkable career.
The computer and defense industries beckoned. Bob spent 13 years as a systems engineer at DEC/HP. But the cosmos had more in store. Florida's Space Coast welcomed him, where he worked on JSTARS and B2 projects for Grumman. Imagine a refurbished Boeing 707 brimming with computer power and radar wizardry—where Bob supported some of the most 700 brilliant engineers on the planet.
Encore: Music and Teaching
Retirement? Not for Bob. He joined Swingtime, Florida's busiest Big Band, where engineers and rocket scientists moonlighted as musicians. Music remained his heartbeat.
In Davis, CA, Bob played with the University of Davis Symphony and graced the Vacaville Jazz Festivals. But teaching beckoned again. He led concert bands, orchestras, and choirs. Pandemic or not, Bob's baton danced, and voices soared. He is currently a Choral Director and music teacher in Eureka Public Schools where the students are buzzing about their awesome new, funny music teacher.
