Inspired by his brother's belief in his abilities, he began to delve into medical texts and found his true vocation. After earning a bachelor's degree in mathematics, Dr. Zagzag received an MD from the Lariboisiere-Saint Louis School of Medicine, both in Paris, France.
In the following years, Dr. Zagzag expanded his professional knowledge by completing a surgical internship at the Rothschild Foundation hospital in Paris, a PhD in neurology and neurosurgery at McGill University in Montreal, a surgical pathology residency, a neuropathology fellowship and a post-doctoral fellowship in Cell Biology at the New York University Grossman School of Medicine. Backed by his considerable education and training, Dr. Zagzag became board-certified in neuropathology, and anatomic pathology.
Dr. Zagzag's professional journey is marked by numerous significant roles and responsibilities. Drawing on years of experience, he excels in numerous positions with New York University's Langone Medical Center. In addition to serving as the chief of the neuropathology division, he is the director of the Microvascular and Molecular Neuro-Oncology Laboratory, and a professor of pathology and neurosurgery. Beyond his extensive contributions to the Neuro-Oncology field, Dr. Zagzag is committed to mentoring and teaching medical and graduate students and the next generation of physician scientists and neurologists, neurosurgeons and neuropathologists. Throughout his career, Dr. Zagzag has conducted significant research into cerebral vasculogenesis and angiogenesis mechanisms, glioma invasion and immune evasion, always with a special emphasis on hypoxia regulated pathological processes. He also demonstrated a special interest in non-neoplastic nervous system pathological conditions mimicking tumors, for example, on neuroimaging studies. He has published numerous book chapters and articles in various journals reporting on important advances, for example, in the understanding of the biology of brain tumors and covering potential novel therapeutic targets in malignant glioblastomas but also in other brain tumors, for example, hemangioblastomas. He also has co-edited a book on the molecular biology of tumors of the nervous system.
Driven to remain abreast of changes in the field, Dr. Zagzag aligns himself with the Society for Neuro-Oncology and The American Association of Neuropathologists. His commitment to continuous learning and professional development is evident in his outstanding achievements, such as winning the Pioneer Award in 2007 and the All-University Distinguished Teaching Award from New York University in 2010.
