Mr. Balmer is a distinguished professional in the field of industrial design, currently serving as the director of product design at RealWear Inc. since 2022. His journey with RealWear began in 2019 when he joined as a product designer after showcasing his expertise in start-up growth, product development, graphics, product modeling, vendor management and acquisition-driven earnings. In this role, he frequently travels to China to collaborate with factory vendors and gain insights into the manufacturing processes. His career is marked by his resilience and adaptability, most notably demonstrated when he retained his position during multiple company-wide layoffs and acquisitions.
Before his tenure at RealWear Inc., Mr. Balmer was the director of product design at JOBY Inc. from 2010 to 2019. During this period, he contributed significantly to the company's innovative projects, including developing a photography app that surpassed Instagram in downloads at the time. His role at JOBY was preceded by his position as lead industrial designer and first employee at BKR Bottle the preceding year, where he played a pivotal role in establishing the company and designing its revolutionary glass water bottle and logo.
Mr. Balmer's early career included roles as an industrial designer at various startups including a San Francisco VC Firm, SISUS Corp and Coheso, all in 2008. He began his professional journey as an industrial design intern at Hiemstra Product Development LLC, a medical device design company, the year before these roles. In addition to his professional work, he has shared his expertise academically as a guest instructor in industrial design in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Serving as a foundation for his professional success, Mr. Balmer holds a BFA in Industrial Design from the California College of the Arts, completed in 2008 with distinction. Prior to this, he pursued coursework in sculpture and psychology at Lewis & Clark College from 2002 to 2004. During this time, he took the advice of a professional advisor, who suggested he pursue industrial design. Initially unfamiliar with the field, Mr. Balmer learned about its significance and quickly developed an interest in it, priming him for his future success. While studying at CCA, he is proud of being nominated for the IDSA Student Merit Award and winning several institutional competitions.
Beyond his education, Mr. Balmer attributes his success to his unique way of thinking, influenced by his upbringing with his identical twin brother and parents, who taught him from a young age about form and function, in their pottery studio.
Throughout his career, Mr. Balmer has been recognized with numerous awards for his contributions to design excellence. He is a three-time recipient of the Red Dot International Product Design Award and has received the iF Design Award twice. His work has also been acknowledged by the IDSA International Design Excellence Award as a two-time finalist and by Travel and Leisure through receiving their Best Tech Accessory Award.
Outside of his professional endeavors, Mr. Balmer enjoys working in prototyping and creating handmade models with intricate 3D painting techniques. He also reads science fiction novels in his free time and prioritizes spending time with his family. Looking toward the future, he is committed to enhancing wearable technology that would allow experienced workers to guide younger colleagues remotely through procedures safely. In the long term, he seeks to drive RealWear Inc.'s success further by leveraging optical capabilities for safer industrial environments.
