A leading voice in his field, Dr. Blanchard serves as the general editor of the Routledge Series on the Political Economy of Asia and as an editorial board member of several top-ranked China- and Asia-oriented academic journals. He is a co-author of Economic Statecraft and Foreign Policy, the editor or co-editor of and a contributor to 20 edited books and special journal issues, and the author of more than 80 articles, book chapters, and other publications.
Prior to his current role, Dr. Blanchard served as a distinguished professor at the School of Advanced International and Area Studies at East China Normal University from 2015 to 2021. His academic career also includes positions at Shanghai Jiaotong University, where he was an assistant dean for international cooperation and exchange and a professor from 2012 to 2015.
During this time, he also held the role of executive director at the Center for the Study of Multinational Corporations within the School of International and Public Affairs. Dr. Blanchard's earlier career includes significant contributions at SFSU's Center for US-China Policy Studies, where he was an associate director from 2005 to 2015 and at SFSU's International Relations Department where he was an associate professor from 2003 to 2015. He also shared his insights as a finance and economics commentator for China Radio International Global English Service and served as a visiting professor at Stanford University.
Prior to his career in academia and research, he worked for the U.S. Federal Savings & Loan Insurance Corporation and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, where he received several awards, and the investment banking firm Kelling, Northcross, & Nobriga.
In addition to his academic and professional roles, Dr. Blanchard has been actively involved in various industry-related organizations such as the National Committee on US-China Relations, International Studies Association, and the European International Studies Association, as well as the Association of Chinese Political Studies, where he held numerous high level leadership roles.
Dr. Blanchard's educational background includes a doctorate in political science from the University of Pennsylvania, completed in 1998, and a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of California, Berkeley, earned in 1984.
His goal-oriented approach and adeptness at designing projects with clear objectives have been instrumental in his success, allowing him to develop detailed plans that enhance his research's impact on policy and business decision-making.
Outside his professional endeavors, Dr. Blanchard is civically engaged through his involvement with Rotary Club of Los Gatos and service on bodies such as the Citizens' Bond Oversight Committee for the Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School District.
