Ms. Butlin's academic accomplishments include a Bachelor of Arts in political science, which she earned with distinction from the University of Calgary in 1995. She subsequently completed a Master of Arts from the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs at Carleton University in 2011. This comprehensive training has proven instrumental in shaping her approach to security and allowing her to capably engage with military doctrine, intelligence, complex threat networks and cybersecurity subject matter. She focuses on strategic, grand-strategic and geostrategic analysis. Notably, Ms. Butlin also holds key designations. She is a Security Risk Management Certified Professional (SRMCP), a Fellow of (ISC)2, holds Fellow status within the Australian Risk Policy Institute (F.ARPI), and earned a MicroMasters certificate in international legal studies from the Université catholique de Louvain in 2019.
Reflective of her commitment to promoting women's presence in security is Ms. Butlin's role in founding the Women in Security and Resilience Alliance Network (WISECRA). She has received numerous accolades for her initiatives, such as being named to the Top Security Influencers compilation by the International Security Journal in 2021, 2022 and 2023, receiving the A.D. Dunton Alumni Award of Distinction from Carleton University (its highest alumni honour) in 2019, the "Woman of the Decade" Award from the Women Economic Forum in 2018, being named #1 on IFSEC's Most influential in Fire and Security List (International) in 2017, and being named to the Canadian Who's Who in 2017. Ms. Butlin was also named to Esprit de Corps Magazine's Top 20 Women in Defence List for 2016, and Vanguard Magazine's People in Defence List for 2015.
Outside her professional endeavors, Ms. Butlin enjoys spending time with her family, gardening, reading and keeping up with current events.
