CINCINNATI, OH, January 07, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Ian A. Silver, PhD, has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Silver, a distinguished quantitative criminologist, has dedicated his career to advancing the field of public health through groundbreaking research. Since assuming his role as a quantitative criminologist with RTI International in 2022, he has managed projects funded by the government and private foundations, sought new funding opportunities and authored academic papers and reports. His expertise in youth justice and correctional populations has been instrumental in unveiling critical insights into the effects of incarcerating youth in adult correctional facilities. His work, highlighted in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA Network Open), explores how youth incarceration in adult facilities is associated with early mortality. His youth/young adult research primarily examines the effects of incarcerating individuals in adult facilities prior to the age of 18 and programs, practices, and policies that could improve individual outcomes after release from the juvenile system. Dr. Silver's current research and technical assistance efforts seek to improve physical and psychological health amongst those individuals who become involved in the juvenile justice system.

This research interest has translated to an adjunct professor position, teaching juvenile justice courses at the University of Cincinnati. In addition to Dr. Silver's expertise in juvenile justice, he has developed an expertise in court processes and pretrial populations, examining the effects of pretrial detention of various outcomes before the adjudication of their case. Aligned with his research expertise, Dr. Silver has employed a wide variety of quantitative techniques in his research, including, but not limited to, structural equation models, panel models, multilevel regression models, propensity score matching, non-parametric kernel regression models, and regression-based imputation techniques. Additionally, Ian's goal is to conduct high quality quantitative research to guide the development of criminal justice policies. Ian's recent work has appeared in JAMA NetworkOpen, Social Forces, Justice Quarterly, Journal of Experimental Criminology, and the Journal of Criminal Justice.

Prior to these roles, he served as an assistant professor at Rowan University from 2020 to 2022, imparting knowledge to future criminologists. Academically, he completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Corrections Institute at the University of Cincinnati from 2019 to 2020 and held a research assistant position at the same institute for the preceding five years. His early career included an internship with the University of Cincinnati Police Department in 2013.

When he was young, Dr. Silver wanted to join the FBI, prompting him to pursue studies in criminal justice. But his interest turned when he was exposed to research in corrections while in school, a field that captivated his attention. He thus decided to pivot his work into correctional research.

Dr. Silver's educational credentials are impressive, with a Doctor of Philosophy in criminology earned from the University of Cincinnati in 2019. He also holds a master's degree in criminal justice from the same institution, completed in 2015, and a Bachelor of Arts in criminal justice with a minor in Arabic language and culture, obtained in 2014.

Throughout his career, Dr. Silver has been recognized for his accomplishments in the industry with several awards, such as the Doctoral Student Research Grant and Graduate Student Mentoring Grant from the University of Cincinnati. He is also an accomplished author of more than 50 peer-reviewed articles that contribute significantly to the body of knowledge in criminology and public health.

Reflecting on his career, Dr. Silver attributes much of his success to his passion and love for his field, along with the guidance and encouragement of numerous mentors who offered insight and fostered his growth. He is further actively involved in several industry-related organizations, including the American Society of Criminology and the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences.

In his personal life, Dr. Silver enjoys playing golf and cooking. Looking ahead, he envisions developing impactful projects that enhance the functioning of the criminal justice system for youth reentering society. His initiatives aim to address critical health priorities, such as physical and mental health challenges, while tackling housing instability and other significant disadvantages faced by young individuals during reintegration.
