Marquis Who's Who Honors Samuel "Sam" Wambugu Gathuya, for Leadership in Public Health Informatics

He leads initiatives to develop, implement and evaluate secure, interoperable and sustainable health information systems in low- and middle-income countries.

    CHAPEL HILL, NC, January 09, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Sam Wambugu, MPH, has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Mr. Wambugu is a distinguished expert in global health informatics, currently serving as a project director at PATH, a global nonprofit based in Seattle dedicated to health equity, since 2021. In this role, he leads initiatives to develop, implement and evaluate secure, interoperable and sustainable health information systems in low- and middle-income countries. His work focuses on improving health informatics policy, governance and workforce capacity. Mr. Wambugu is also dedicated to mentoring his team members and guiding them in the implementation of global health projects. His commitment to empowering communities across Africa has been a hallmark of his career, fostering resilience and self-sufficiency by enabling these communities to develop tools and process them to independently detect, and respond to diseases that often prey on the most vulnerable.

Before joining PATH, Mr. Wambugu was a health informatics advisor at ICF in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, from 2014 to 2021. During this time, he honed his skills in project management and leadership within the field of public health informatics. Before joining ICF, he excelled as the party chief for FHI 360 in Ghana between 2013 and 2014 after initially working as the associate director for strategic information from 2010 to 2013. Mr. Wambugu's earlier roles included being a resident advisor for strategic information at Macro International in Kenya between 2007 and 2010 and a senior technical specialist for monitoring and evaluation at FHI 360 in Kenya from 2003 to 2007.

Mr. Wambugu's career began with positions such as health information systems officer at the International Rescue Committee in Kakuma, Kenya, from 2002 to 2004 and head of end-user training at IAT in Nairobi, Kenya, between 1998 and 2001. Over the last two decades of his career, Mr. Wambugu has worked in many countries including Haiti, Vietnam, Ghana, Nigeria, Liberia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, Botswana, South Africa and the United States.

In preparation for his career in this sector, Mr. Wambugu received a Bachelor of Science in information sciences from Moi University in Kenya in 1998 and a Master of Public Health in demography and biostatistics from Kenyatta University in Nairobi in 2008. He also garnered numerous certifications, such project management professional (PMP) with project management international (PMI), certified information systems auditor (CISA), certified computer information systems security professional (CISSP), certified cloud security professional (CCSP), health care information security and privacy practitioner (HCISPP), Microsoft certified systems engineer (MCSE) and professional database administrator through Microsoft (MCBDA).

Mr. Wambugu is a member of several industry-related organizations, including the Information Systems audit and Control Association, the International Information Systems security Certification Consortium, the Global Digital Health Network, the Kenya Health Informatics Association and the Project Management Institute. Civically, he remains affiliated as a dedicated member of Toastmasters International. He is also involved in church charitable work.
As an expert in his field, Mr. Wambugu co-authored several publications, including 'A Primer on the Privacy, Security, and Confidentiality of Electronic Health Records' for the MEASURE Evaluation Project in 2016 and 'Leveraging PEPFAR-Supported Health Information Systems for COVID-19 Pandemic Response' published in Emerging Infectious Diseases in 2022 among many others in peer-reviewed journals. He has also contributed to a weekly column for the Sunday Nation newspaper for 19 years, since 2005.

Mr. Wambugu was recognized with as fellow by the American College of Health Data Management. His future goals include dedicating more time to collaborating with vulnerable and marginalized communities worldwide and pursuing a doctorate in public health to further enhance his ability to impact these communities' well-being.
