Before his current roles, Mr. McGowan was an associate professor at The New School from 2009 to 2015, where he nurtured future leaders in environmental policy and science. He also chaired the interdisciplinary science and environmental studies programs. Mr. McGowan's diverse career also included serving as a board member for the Metcalf Institute for Marine and Environmental Reporting from 1999 to 2010, demonstrating his dedication to environmental journalism. He also showcased his expertise as an apprentice shipwright with Babcock International Group in Rosyth, Scotland, between 1994 and 1998. One of Mr. McGowan's most notable career achievements was his leadership of the Scientists' Institute for Public Information, where he served as the president from 1974 to 1994. Under his guidance, the organization played a pivotal role in bridging the gap between the scientific community and the media. Earlier in his career, Mr. McGowan spent 10 years as a high school teacher in the environmental education program.
Mr. McGowan's academic foundation includes a Bachelor of Engineering in mechanical engineering from the prestigious Yale University in 1957. This educational background laid the groundwork for his transition from engineering to teaching and eventually to his influential roles in environmental advocacy and education.

Beyond his primary professional endeavors, Mr. McGowan has made significant contributions as an active board member of the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) since 1989, contributing to its mission from his profound understanding of environmental sciences. He also serves on the advisory board for the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Scientists at Arizona State University and chairs Student Pugwash USA. Previously, Mr. McGowan's commitment to global scientific dialogue was evident through his participation in the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs from 2005 to 2010.
Mr. McGowan has contributed over 100 scientific articles to peer-reviewed journals as a scholar. He also authored the 2024 book "The Political Activism of Anthropologist Franz Boas, Citizen Scientist" via Cambridge Scholars Publishing. Mr. McGowan is currently working on a new book, "Life and Death in the Anthropocene," and plans to continue writing and teaching in the future.
In light of his accomplishments, Mr. McGowan received a Teaching Award from the American Physics Society in 1968. He was also named Top Science and Technical Expert by the International Association of Top Professionals in 2019.
