As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. MacKinnon, a licensed clinical psychologist and educator with over two decades of experience in higher education and private practice, has made significant contributions to the field of psychology. As the founder of MacKinnon Psychological Associates since 1997, he serves as a licensed clinical psychologist. In this role, Dr. MacKinnon offers comprehensive care to individuals across the lifespan, dealing with a wide range of psychological issues, including trauma.

In addition to his private practice, Dr. MacKinnon has had a profound impact on academia. From 2005 to 2022, he served as the director of the MacKinnon Psychology Counseling Clinic at Rochester University in Rochester Hills, Michigan. This clinic was named in his honor in 2018 for his dedication and service. At the university, he taught advanced psychological courses and specialized in marriage, family therapy and trauma.

Dr. MacKinnon's commitment to his profession extends beyond his practice and teaching roles. He has been an active member of the Academy for the Psychoanalytic Arts, where he held the position of vice president. Building upon his professional achievements is Dr. MacKinnon's solid educational foundation. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy in clinical psychology from the University of Detroit-Mercy in 1997 after completing a Master of Arts in marriage and family therapy at Wayne State University in 1987. His undergraduate studies resulted in two Bachelor of Science degrees, one in human resources development from Oakland University and another in religious education from Rochester University -- both conferred in 1981. A licensed clinical psychologist in Michigan since 1986, Dr. MacKinnon attributes his success to a collaboration between his clinical work and teaching, his continuous pursuit of knowledge, creativity, personable nature and ethical drive.

Dr. MacKinnon's personal life is marked by his dedication to community service as a volunteer for the Prostate Cancer Support Group at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan, for more than five years. In reflecting on his life outside of his professional endeavors, Dr. MacKinnon is deeply committed to ethical practice within psychology -- a trait he hopes will define his legacy among peers and patients alike. Born in Highland Park and married to Nancy Keller-MacKinnon in 1979, they share one child. He finds joy in hobbies such as growing bonsai trees and practicing magic tricks. Looking ahead, Dr. MacKinnon envisions continuing his private practice while consulting post-retirement from university teaching duties.
