Dr. Araujo has been with Sanofi Genzyme for over a decade, holding various roles that have significantly impacted the field of medical science. In his current role position since 2021, he leads the global evidence-generation strategy for rare diseases. Before this, Dr. Araujo served as the global head of medical capability development in Boston from 2020 to 2021 and as the global medical learning and capability lead in Cambridge in 2020. From 2017 to 2020, he was the global medical director in the Greater Boston area. His journey with Sanofi Genzyme began in São Paulo, where he was the medical manager for rare diseases in emerging markets between 2014 and 2017.
Having held several other noteworthy roles in Brazil, Dr. Araujo was a professor at ICTQ from 2011 to 2017. He also served as the laboratory director at Reprogenetics between 2013 and 2016. Earlier in his career, Dr. Araujo was the head geneticist for Diagnostics from 2012 to 2014, responsible for the genetic diagnostic department, genetic counseling and genetic diagnostic development. Dr. Araujo has been in the field since 2004.
Dr. Araujo was born in Portugal and lived in Brazil, France and Belgium before graduating from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland with a Bachelor of Science in genetics, with honors, in 2003 and a Doctor of Philosophy and Doctor of Medicine in molecular biology and neuroscience in Scotland in 2005. Furthering his expertise, he completed the Leading Business Growth Program in artificial intelligence and machine learning at Massachusetts Institute of Technology Professional Education in 2024. He is also board-certified in medical affairs by ACMA since 2020.
Active in his professional community, Dr. Araujo is a member of the Boston Biotech Association and TPT Unfolded. His community and humanitarian efforts included developing diagnostic infrastructure and training staff in Angola, volunteering to rebuild houses after the 2004 tsunami in Sri Lanka and participating in Sanofi's humanitarian program for medical approval.
Throughout his career, Dr. Araujo has achieved numerous milestones and received several accolades. He was also pivotal in bringing next-generation sequencing to Brazil as a diagnostic tool. His research contributions are also significant, including zero-gravity research with the European Space Agency and NASA, biochemical research on ion channels and gravity sensation, cardiomyopathy gene studies and analysis of mitochondrial DNA of penguins in Antarctica. Notably, Dr. Araujo was invited by the Queen of England to present his work at the Royal Society in 2008.
In light of his success, Dr. Araujo has been recognized with awards such as the Second Prize by the Biotechnology Entrepreneur Program of the British Bureau of Scientific Research Council in 2004 and the First Prize for his zero gravity research by the European Low Gravity Research Association.
