Ms. McDermott's career began in the banking sector, where she held the position of vice president and international trade specialist at several institutions, such as The Bank of New York, MandT, Marine Midland, HSBC and Union State Bank from 1982 to 2000. During this time, she was responsible for training the commercial credit department at what is now the Bank of New York in Newburgh. Her expertise in credit analysis earned her high praise from colleagues, including a Wall Street banker who described her as the best credit analyst he had ever worked with. Her work in international trade took her to Hong Kong, Singapore and China, where she assisted United States companies in exporting to these regions. In recognition of her efforts, she received the Governor's Award from Governor Mario Cuomo.

Ms. McDermott's educational background includes coursework toward a bachelor's degree at Mount Saint Mary College and an Associate of Applied Science in accounting from Orange County Community College, where she graduated with a 4.0 GPA in 1973. She attributes her success to her parents, especially her mother, who provided unwavering support throughout her life. A pivotal moment in her early years was meeting Ms. Frederica Warner, founder and executive director emeritus of Meals on Wheels in Newburgh, which left a lasting impression and influenced her future involvement with the organization.

In addition to her professional achievements, Ms. McDermott has been actively involved in various civic organizations. She served as president of the Calvary Presbyterian Church Board of Trustees, held the same position at the Hudson Valley International Trade Association and is the director emeritus for the Orange County Chamber of Commerce. She also held roles on the board of directors for the United Way and Meals on Wheels of New York State and was a member of the Junior League of Newburgh. Her dedication to community service has been recognized with several awards, including the Citizen of the Month Award from Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus in 2019, the Community Service Award from Les Soeurs Amiables Civic Club in 2015 and the Everyday Hero Award from the Kiwanis Club of Newburgh in 2015.

Ms. McDermott's accomplishments have been featured in various publications, such as "Carole McDermott's tireless devotion" in the Times Hudson Valley and "Carole McDermott is Orange County's Citizen of the Month." In 2023, she was named a "Super-ager," a designation for individuals over 80 years old who maintain a healthy lifestyle and cognitive skills comparable to much younger individuals.
