Dr. Ewen, a distinguished professor emeritus at the City University of New York (CUNY) and a renowned public intellectual, has dedicated over five decades as an author and teacher of media studies, history, sociology, and American studies. His 1966 marriage to Elizabeth Ewen gave rise to a writing partnership that led to two co-authored books. His career began at Empire State College in 1971, where he served as an assistant professor until 1977. During this time, he laid the groundwork for what would become a pioneering career in media studies. Dr. Ewen then joined Hunter College and the CUNY Graduate Center, where he has been an eminent professor for more than four decades. His tenure at these institutions has been marked by his innovative approach to understanding the intersections between media and society, and he is generally considered to be one of the founders of the field of media studies.

In addition to his long-standing role at Hunter College and the CUNY Graduate Center, Dr. Ewen was a distinguished visiting professor at New York University (NYU) from 1999 to 2001. He also taught in Moscow and St. Petersburg as a Fulbright Senior Specialist in 2006, and has lectured internationally. His film and media studies expertise has earned him significant recognition as a leading figure in the field. Dr. Ewen's commitment to education is further exemplified by his involvement with the National Museum of African American History and Culture's Directors' Circle, where he contributes to preserving and promoting cultural heritage.

Among other noteworthy initiatives, Dr. Ewen chaired the board of directors for the Frederic Ewen Academic Freedom Center at NYU from 2006 to 2014.

Throughout his career, Dr. Ewen has been deeply influenced by existentialist principles, which have guided his pursuit of meaning and purpose in his personal and professional life. This philosophical perspective has driven him to explore how media shapes societal values and consumer behaviors, as evidenced by his groundbreaking work "Captains of Consciousness: Advertising and the Social Roots of the Consumer Culture," published in 1976.

As an author, Dr. Ewen has also penned widely translated influential works that have garnered international attention. His book "All Consuming Images: The Politics of Style in Contemporary Culture" was adapted into a documentary series titled "The Public Mind." Another notable work, "PR! A Social History of Spin," was transformed into documentaries aired on BBC and French television, highlighting its global relevance.
