Dr. Sun's career commenced at Petroleum Information in London, where he served as a research geoscientist from 1990 to 1993. During this time, he honed his data analysis and geological research skills, contributing to the company's core business before it was acquired by IHS Group, now part of S&P Global. In August 1993, Dr. Sun transitioned to Chevron in San Ramon, California, as a consulting geoscientist. Here, he played a pivotal role in developing their global Carbonate Fields Database project, significantly influencing his decision to establish C&C Reservoirs.

In preparation for his career, Dr. Sun earned a Bachelor of Science in petroleum geology at Northeast Petroleum University in China, in 1985 and a Doctor of Philosophy in reservoir geology from University of Reading, UK in 1990. These academic achievements laid the foundation for his expertise in geoscience, which he has leveraged throughout his professional journey.

Dr. Sun's dedication to innovation is further evidenced by his membership in esteemed organizations, such as the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and the Society of Petroleum Engineers. As a seasoned researcher, his contributions include authoring scientific papers on "Use of global Analogues to Improve Decision Quality in Exploration, Development and Production" and "Analogue Benchmarking Workflow to Improve Hydrocarbon Recovery" and winning of the AAPG Excellent Poster Award. Throughout his career, Dr. Sun has published over 20 peer-reviewed scientific articles and his first book, "Persistence is the Key to Success," in Chinese.
