JACKSONVILLE, FL, February 13, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Tanmay Abhay Kulkarni, PhD, has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Kulkarni is an esteemed Assistant Professor at the Mayo Clinic, where he has been conducting groundbreaking research in cancer biology for over seven years. His work primarily focuses on understanding the complex tumor microenvironment, particularly in pancreatic cancer; and in clarifying the roles of various cell types as well as extracellular matrix proteins in cancer progression. Dr. Kulkarni's expertise extends to biophysics, nanomechanics, machine learning and cell-extracellular matrix interactions. His innovative research approach has led to significant advancements in the field including his notable publication that utilized machine learning to quantify a simplified tumor microenvironment with remarkable accuracy.

Having begun his career at the Mayo Clinic in 2017, Dr. Kulkami worked as a researcher until 2020, honing his skills in designing experiments, collecting and analyzing data, and preparing manuscripts. He then advanced to senior research fellow in 2021, continuing his exploration of cancer biology. In 2022, Dr. Kulkarni was appointed an Assistant Professor, further solidifying his commitment to advancing scientific knowledge. Using advanced microscopy techniques, Dr. Kulkarni has been a pioneer in demonstrating that cellular nanomechanical properties are governed by their cell cycle and can be used to distinguish between various cell uptaking processes. He has also demonstrated the role of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-1 (VEGF-1) in slowing down sensescence, a significant stride to provide insights into complex neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's and dementia. Utilizing his engineering background, Dr. Kulkami designed a first of its kind algorithm to quantify permeability in zebrafish vasculature, a promising start to understand vasculature in cancer. Dr. Kulkarni is actively involved in writing grants to funding institutions such as the National Institute of Health(NIH) and the Department of Defense (DOD) to seek funding and continue conducting groundbreaking research.

Prior to his tenure at the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Kulkarni served as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Maryland Baltimore County in 2017 and as a Research Assistant in the bio-electronics laboratory from 2014 to 2017. His early career also included a position as a graduate student researcher in the department of psychiatry at the University of Maryland between 2013 and 2014.

Dr. Kulkami became highly educated receiving a Bachelor of Engineering in electronics and telecommunications from Mumbai University in 2012. Subsequently, he earned a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering in 2014 and a Doctor of Philosophy in Electrical Engineering in 2017 from the University of Maryland Baltimore County.

As a past member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Dr. Kulkarni remains engaged with industry related organizations that support his ongoing research endeavors. In addition to his academic and professional accomplishments, he is actively involved in civic-minded organizations, such as No Borders for Hope, where he volunteers to assist underprivileged individuals with basic necessities. Dr. Kulkarni is also dedicated to mentoring young scientists through programs like Science Program for the Advancement of Research Knowledge (SPARK) and the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) at the Mayo Clinic. His commitment to fostering student success has been recognized with an appreciation award for his positive impact on mentees. Additionally, Dr. Kulkami has edited special issues for multiple journals and serves as a member of review board for various journals.

Dr. Kulkarni's contributions to the scientific community are further evidenced by his numerous publications. He has received several accolades for his hard work, such as a Best Poster Presentation at the 9th Mayo Clinic Symposium on Immuno-Oncology and Tumor Microenvironment Crosstalk in 2022.

As he prepares for the future, Dr. Kulkarni intends to advance his research into the tumor microenvironment. He also remains passionate about mentoring future scientists.
