Since 1972, he has been associated with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System at Auburn University, where he served as an extension entomologist and contract researcher. His career is marked by a profound commitment to advancing agricultural science, particularly in the realm of pest management. His expertise has been instrumental in guiding cotton growers across Alabama in effective insect management strategies, ensuring the sustainability and productivity of their crops.

A significant highlight of Mr. Smith's career was his pivotal role as the lead university entomologist during Alabama's fight against the boll weevil from 1986 to 1995. Throughout his career, Mr. Smith has been actively involved with industry-related organizations, such as the Entomological Society of America and the Georgia Entomological Society. He attributes much of his success to staying abreast of industry developments through these organizations. In addition, he gives credit to the relationships he developed, his personable nature and his ability to connect with others.

Beyond his professional achievements, Mr. Smith has made significant contributions to civic-minded organizations. He has donated to educational institutions and assisted living facilities and also sponsored a woman with visual impairment who served as his caregiver, helping her regain her eyesight.

In recognition of his contributions to agriculture and entomology, Mr. Smith has received several prestigious awards. Among these, he is most proud of receiving induction into the Auburn University Agricultural Hall of Honor in 2021 and the Excellence in Integrated Pest Management Award in 2018.

Outside of his career, Mr. Smith enjoyed a fulfilling personal life alongside his late spouse, with whom he shared 54 years of marriage and raised five children until her passing in 2019. In his free time, he is an avid sports enthusiast, played noontime basketball with faculty members until age 73 and remains actively involved with Auburn athletics, particularly football and basketball. He also enjoys reading The Wall Street Journal for insights into politics and global advancements.
