Dr. Powell-Alexander is a highly respected associate professor of emergency medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where she has served since 2003. Her career spans almost 30 years, during which she has made significant contributions to the field of emergency medicine. She is renowned for her dedication to mentoring residents, medical students, and nurse practitioner students in the adult emergency department. Her commitment to training individuals in emergency medicine is evident as she has successfully guided twenty-seven classes of practitioners in this vital area of health care.

In addition to her role as an associate professor, Dr. Powell-Alexander has been the co-director of IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Anti-racism) within the emergency medicine department at Vanderbilt University Medical Center since 2021. She plays a pivotal role in supervising faculty resident recruitment and fostering diversity and inclusion. Her efforts emphasize the importance of equity in health care and advocate for a diverse workforce capable of serving varied populations effectively. Prior to her tenure at Vanderbilt, she was a faculty physician at Henry Ford Health System from 1997 to 2003.

Dr. Powell-Alexander's academic journey began with a bachelor's degree in biology from Tuskegee University in 1989, followed by an MD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1994. She completed her residency in emergency medicine at Emory University and obtained certification from the Department of Emergency Medicine in 1997. Her educational background laid a strong foundation for her career, and she attributes much of her success to the support of her mother and mentors like Dr. Howard P. Carter, Dr. Velma Richardson, Dr. Sheryl Heron, Dr. Leon Haley Jr, Dr. Emanuel Rivers, Dr. Anita Howard and Dr. Vanessa Gamble, who inspired her advocacy for marginalized groups.

Throughout her career, Dr. Powell-Alexander has been recognized with numerous awards, including the John Chapman and Gene Chapman Award for Teaching Excellence in 2014 and Outstanding Faculty of the Year in 2005. She has also received multiple teaching awards and has been named CREDO Attending of the Year three times. In 2023, she received an award for values and vision named for a beloved Professor of Emergency Medicine, and she was the Resident's choice for faculty who most embodies our values of excellence, integrity, humility, patient centeredness, and DEi for 2024. Her professional affiliations include membership in organizations such as the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine, the American Academy of Emergency Medicine, the National Medical Association, the American Medical Association, the Student National Medical Association, the Latino Medical Student Association and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

Beyond her professional achievements, Dr. Powell-Alexander is deeply committed to civic engagement through her involvement with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. This organization focuses on philanthropy and community service initiatives that benefit youth and the broader community. Her dedication to representation and diversity extends beyond her professional life as she encourages residents to reflect on their experiences with diversity in leadership roles.

In her personal life, Dr. Powell-Alexander cherishes spending time with her husband and three children. She also enjoys reading, gardening, cooking, enjoying music and spending time with friends. Looking ahead, she aims to further contribute to academic medicine by enhancing medical education through student development initiatives. She plans to focus on admissions processes and curriculum improvements while continuing to impact patient care positively.
