Dr. Elias is a distinguished neurosciences expert and a professor at the University of Michigan Medical School. She has also been instrumental in directing the neuroscience graduate program on campus. Over the past 25 years, she has significantly contributed to understanding the intricate connections between metabolism and reproductive function. Dr. Elias's work in this area has earned her recognition and respect within the scientific and educational communities.
In addition to her role at the University of Michigan, Dr. Elias has been the director of the Mouse Metabolic Phenotyping Center, a National Institutes of Health-sponsored resource, since 2023. Beginning her professional career at Universidade de São Paulo, she initially served as assistant and associate professor from 1998 to 2008. Dr. Elias then joined the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center as an associate professor until 2012. These early experiences have been instrumental to her success as an educator all these years later.
In preparation for her future, Dr. Elias's academic journey began with a bachelor's degree in biology and biological sciences from Universidade Estadual de Campinas in 1990. She furthered her education by earning a master's degree in neuroanatomy and a PhD in neuroscience and behavior from the Universidade de São Paulo in 1997. Her postdoctoral work at Harvard University, completed in 1999, solidified her expertise in neuroscience and neuroendocrinology.
Dr. Elias's dedication to her field is further exemplified by her membership in prestigious organizations like the Latin American Academy of Sciences, the Society for Neuroscience, the American Physiological Society, and the Endocrine Society. In 2020, she was also named a fellow of the American Academy for the Advancement of Science for her distinguished contributions to the field of reproductive and metabolic physiology, particularly for elucidating the mechanisms that couple metabolism to the neuroendocrine control of reproduction. Beyond her professional achievements, Dr. Elias is actively involved in community outreach initiatives, volunteering to teach students and conduct seminars and lectures in Brazil.
Dr. Elias attributes her success to her natural curiosity, passion for neuroscience and academia, and commitment to collaboration and learning from others.
