CAMBRIDGE, MA, February 19, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Richard "Dick" Larson, professor with the Institute for Data, Systems, and Society of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was selected by Marquis Who's Who for a prominent feature in the Boston regional edition of TIME magazine.
Drawing upon more than 50 years of educational excellence, Dr. Larson is well-regarded for his expertise in operations research, authorship and higher education. Spending the majority of his career at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), starting in 1961 as an undergraduate, he initially joined its faculty in 1969 as a professor, was quickly promoted and awarded tenure, and earned post-tenure status in 2019. During his career, he served in several positions of increasing prominence, such as the director of the Center for Advanced Educational Services between 1995 and 2003.
Although formally retired, Dr. Larson continues to serve as the principal investigator for the MIT BLOSSOMS ("Blended Learning Open Source Science Or Math Studies") program, which seeks to develop and distribute video lessons on science and mathematics for students worldwide. Notably, the BLOSSOMS initiative is one of the first widely distributed open-source learning repositories, and most of its videos are available for viewing on YouTube.
Adjacent to his work at MIT, Dr. Larson managed an independent applied research and consulting firm for over four decades, through which he applied his research in urban systems to real-world scenarios. The firm first began as a nonprofit organization and was acquired several times, becoming Queues Enforth Development in 1990 and then joining the portfolio of 22nd Century Technologies in 2023. Impressively, Dr. Larson published numerous scientific papers and books on operations research and urban systems, including (with colleague Amedeo R. Odoni) "Urban Operations Research," now a classic modeling textbook with 1,350 citations. Dr. Larson's research resulted in advancements in geometrical probability and queueing theory, yielding the Queue Inference Engine and the Hypercube Queueing Model, both cited myriad times by colleagues and media organizations.
Dr. Larson was president of the Operations Research Society of America, serving for two separate terms from 1993 to 1994, and later, he was president of the newer society, the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), in 2005. He was named a founding fellow of INFORMS. Dr. Larson recently authored the book "Model Thinking for Everyday Life, How to Make Smarter Decisions" in 2023, which has received much acclaim from scholars and practitioners. Looking forward, Dr. Larson aims to continue publishing his research.
EDUCATION HIGHLIGHTS
His thesis prompted him to write "Urban Police Patrol Analysis," a highly cited book on mathematical models for patrol operations, resource allocation and functions of police emergency response systems.
AWARD HIGHLIGHTS
Elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering, Dr. Larson has also earned numerous accolades throughout his career. His book "Urban Police Patrol Analysis" was awarded the Frederick W. Lanchester Prize from the Operations Research Society of America in 1972, and he accepted the George E. Kimball Medal in 2002, the INFORMS President's Award in 2003, and the Daniel Berg Lifetime Achievement Medal in 2017.
