Dr. Pal has established a distinguished reputation in the field of electrical engineering and currently serves as the general manager of automotive SerDes at onsemi. In this leadership capacity since 2022, he has proven instrumental in building business applications and developing cutting-edge technologies and products for customers. His work focuses on high-speed connectivity between sensors, operating at multi-gigabit speeds ranging from 2 gigabits to 16 gigabits per link. Additionally, Dr. Pal leverages a signature versatility and deep expertise across diverse platforms including very high-speed communications, wired links, algorithms, signal processing, machine learning and semiconductors.
Before accepting his current appointment, Dr. Pal had thrived as the chief scientist and chief technology officer for artificial intelligence and machine learning at the Cadence Design Systems, IP Group (Tensilica), a position he had assumed in 2018. He also earned valuable experience as the vice president of machine learning at Wave Computing from 2017 to 2018 and from 2015 to 2017 as the vice president of technology at Qualcomm. Notably, he served at Ikanos Communications from 2009 to 2015 as the senior vice president of research and development and chief technology officer and contributed to the development and commercialization of high-speed broadband access technologies and their chipsets, which Dr. Pal marks as a significant career milestone.
Dr. Pal's earlier career includes titles such as the chief technology officer and operating partner/executive-in-residence at Tallwood Venture Capital from 2004 to 2009 and consulting professor of electrical engineering at Stanford University from 2002 to 2009. He proudly launched Telicos Corporation in 2002 and excelled as the president and chief executive officer through 2004. His leadership roles also include vice president of engineering at Virata / Globespan from 2000 to 2002 and founding chief executive officer, chief technology officer and vice president of engineering at Excess Bandwidth Corporation from 1998 to 2000.
Throughout his career, Dr. Pal has proudly received numerous honors, including being recognized as a fellow of the Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in 2002 for seminal contributions to the field of digital communications. He has also secured several patents related to communication technologies, such as a gateway device for home networks and non-linear echo cancellation for wireless modems, and his contributions to the first worldwide standard for symmetric digital subscriber lines have been significant in advancing international communication standards. Additionally, several hundred million Broadband Access Chipsets of all flavors and variations (ADSL1/2, HDSL2, G.SHDSL, VDSL, Vectored VDSL, G.fast, GigaDSL etc.) that were developed by Dr. Pal (or his team, under his leadership) or are based on technologies developed by Dr. Pal (or his team, under his leadership) have been shipped globally.
Dr. Pal relies on exceptional academic training including a Bachelor of Technology (Hons.) in electronics and electrical communications engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur, India in 1980. By the way, IIT Kharagpur is the first and the largest IIT, which was established in 1951, soon after the independence of India in 1947. Dr. Pal subsequently pursued graduate studies and first earned a Master of Science in electrical engineering from Washington State University in 1982 followed by a terminal degree in the field of electrical engineering from the prestigious Stanford University in 1990.
Dr. Pal actively seeks opportunities for civic engagement and has made an effort to support organizations such as the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children's Health, The endowment for Kailath lectures and colloquia at the Stanford University and, Indus Entrepreuners (TiE) often via donations and sometimes through active participation. He has humbly accepted recognition for his many meaningful contributions including awards such as the Johnson Electrical Engineering Award from Washington State University in 1981 and National Merit recognition from the Government of India in 1975.
A passion for travel and spending time with his family are vital to Dr. Pal and his desire to strike an ideal balance between his personal life and professional obligations. Recent trips have taken him to destinations including almost all countries in the Western Europe, Morocco, Greece, Turkey, Africa, Singapore and New Zealand. He has toured historic Buddhist Temples in South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Cambodia and, Thailand.
