As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Walker, a distinguished drug discovery and process chemistry expert, has dedicated over three decades to the field. Currently serving as senior director of Synthetic Molecule Design and Development (SMDD) at Eli Lilly and Company, he ensures that the chemical process to manufacture a medicine is performed safely and effectively so that patients can access new treatments for unmet medical needs.
Dr. Walker's journey began as a research associate in medicinal chemistry at Procter & Gamble from 1991 to 1994. After gaining additional academic training on the total synthesis of anti-tumor natural products, he advanced to Pharmacia & Upjohn Pharmaceutical Company (later acquired by Pfizer Inc.) from 1999 to 2011, where he worked as a senior principal scientist in drug discovery. From 2011 to 2013, as a senior scientist at Kalexsyn, now Dipharma Inc., he began to take on a new role as a process chemist. He also held tenure at Monsanto Company, now Bayer AG, as a senior research chemist in process chemistry from 2013 to 2015. He was later promoted to associate science fellow and then science fellow until 2019.
In 2019, Dr. Walker joined animal healthcare company Zoetis, Inc. as a senior principal scientist in process chemistry before joining Eli Lilly and Company in his current role in 2023. In addition to his primary roles, he has been an adjunct assistant chemistry professor at Western Michigan University since 2012, sharing his knowledge with aspiring chemists. He is passionate about sharing the power of teamwork and encouraging discovery.
Dr. Walker's achievements include the discovery in his laboratory of a new drug for potentially treating the cognitive deficits of schizophrenia and leading a cohort of scientists and engineers to advance a program and new medicine into phase three human clinical testing with Eli Lilly and Company. He holds an impressive record of 33 US patents and applications and is also a member of the American Chemical Society. Throughout his career, his projects have been recognized with awards, such as the distinguished Monsanto Above and Beyond Award, Division Award for Project Team of the Year at Procter & Gamble, and the prestigious Eagle Scout honor from the Boy Scouts of America.
Dr. Walker's academic background includes a doctorate in organic chemistry from Indiana University Bloomington in 2000 and a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Michigan Technological University in 1991. In addition to his education, he owes his success to a high school chemistry teacher who recognized his talent for laboratory work and mentored him during his formative years.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Walker is actively involved in civic organizations, including the United Way Worldwide and the Boy Scouts of America. He has also co-authored over 40 peer-reviewed scientific publications on drug discovery and process development of innovative chemical routes to manufacture new medicines, contributing significantly to the scientific literature.
In his personal life, Dr. Walker enjoys playing golf, genealogy, and volunteering. He also prioritizes spending time with his family. Looking to the next several years, he aspires to be part of a team that delivers new medicine to patients, aiming to improve patients' lives through collaborative efforts in drug development.
