WILLOUGHBY, OH, February 21, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dorr G. Dearborn, PhD, MD has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Dearborn, a retired pediatric pulmonologist, has dedicated the last two decades to environmental health, culminating in his role as emeritus professor of environmental health at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. His tenure at the university is marked by significant contributions to public health, particularly in understanding the impact of environmental factors on children's respiratory health. Dr. Dearborn, currently the Mary Ann Swetland Professor Emeritus, focused on research that bridged clinical practice and environmental science.
Dr. Dearborn's career is distinguished by his leadership as principal investigator for the National Institutes of Health's National Children's Study Center at the Case Western Reserve University. His work in this capacity underscored his commitment to advancing children's health through rigorous scientific inquiry. His research on water-damaged homes in Cleveland contaminated with toxic fungi and the related pulmonary hemorrhage in infants has been particularly influential. The fungal toxins produced by the fungus Stachybotrys chartarum in Cleveland are significantly more potent than those historically linked to fatalities in Central Russia and in livestock in Eastern Europe.
In addition to his academic roles, Dr. Dearborn has been an active member of several health-related organizations. He co-chaired the Greater Cleveland Asthma Coalition and served on the Greater Cleveland Lead Advisory Council. His involvement with the Environmental Health Policy Committee of the American Thoracic Society and the Scientific Advisory Committee of the National Center for Healthy Homes further highlights his dedication to improving public health policies and practices.
Dr. Dearborn's testimony before congressional budget subcommittees was pivotal in addressing a pulmonary hemorrhage outbreak among infants in Congressman Louis Stokes' district. His advocacy related to the indoor environment particularly involving mold contributed to the Department of Housing and Urban Development in establishing the Division of Healthy Homes and Lead Poisoning. The initial Healthy Homes budget of $10 million in 1999 resulted in a large grant to the Cleveland public health community. This HUD nationwide program on housing subsequently had annual budgets of over $200 million.
His last research grant focused on assessing indoor air quality's impact on veterans with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This study aimed to identify housing conditions exacerbating COPD symptoms, intending to inform public health interventions and improve living conditions for affected veterans.
Dr. Dearborn's educational background laid a strong foundation for his career achievements. He earned his PhD in Biochemistry and his MD at the University of Minnesota in 1970, following a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Willamette University in 1961. His pediatric training at the University of Minnesota Hospitals was later completed at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland. This honed his skills as a clinician, enabling him to also use his biochemistry background to address complex health issues in the indoor environment of inner-city homes.
Throughout his career, Dr. Dearborn has been recognized for his contributions with several awards, including being named a Public Health Champion by the Ohio Public Health Association in 2014 and receiving the Distinguished Alumni Award from Willamette University in 2011. These accolades reflect his enduring impact on public health and environmental safety.
