KENSINGTON, MD, March 03, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Ernest G. Lockrow, DO, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Lockrow celebrates many years' experience in his professional network and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Driven by a lifelong ambition to become a doctor, Ernest G. Lockrow, DO, pursued a career in medicine. While he no longer practices in a clinical capacity, Dr. Lockrow continues to contribute to the field as a dedicated volunteer with the Red Cross, assisting in the operating room. His legacy also extends into academia, where he served as a professor at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS), earning the title of Professor Emeritus in 2023 upon retirement. Even in retirement, Dr. Lockrow remains affiliated with USU and is actively engaged in academic initiatives.
Dr. Lockrow's journey into the field of medicine began in 1976 when he initially applied to West Point. Eager to pursue a medical education, he wrote a letter to the Surgeon General of the Army, expressing his interest in attending medical school after graduating from West Point. Initially not accepted to medical school due to the rigorous selection process, where only the top 2% of West Point graduates were chosen for medical school, Dr. Lockrow persevered, beginning his service as an engineer officer before pursuing his dream through the military's Health Professions Scholarship Program. This program enabled him to complete his medical degree at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1988.
He started his medical journey as an intern in Family Medicine at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, in 1988. He went on to serve as a Brigade flight surgeon for the 82nd Airborne Division from 1989 to 1991 and was deployed to Honduras and the Gulf War. As a flight surgeon, he participated in the first deep attack on Iraq and was awarded the Army Air Medal for his valor. He then went on to complete residency training in 1994 in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Tripler Army Medical Center. Dr. Lockrow returned to West Point as an Obstetrician-Gynecologist for two years and then joined the physician staff at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the faculty at USU. He was appointed as an Assistant Professor in 1997. His leadership and clinical expertise quickly became evident as he assumed roles such as Chair of the Operating Room Committee, Chief of the Gynecology Division and Chief of the Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery Division at Walter Reed. His advanced training included a fellowship in pelvic surgery under the renowned gynecologist Dr. Clifford Wheelless, which propelled him to become a nationally recognized leader in minimally invasive surgery.
Dr. Lockrow was then assigned to USU in 2003, where he served for several years as the Director of Continuing Education for the Department at USU, and he subsequently developed and implemented a multimillion-dollar training and research program in telerobotic surgery. Following this assignment to USU, in 2008, he "returned" to Walter Reed and assumed the nearly insurmountable task of leading the Departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Walter Reed and National Naval Medical Center through the integration in becoming Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC). Dr. Lockrow was the Chair of the Integrated Department. With his unique insight, phenomenal leadership and tireless dedication, he was able to lead the department through the integration and serve as a model for one of the smoothest transitions of any Department going through this process. His exceptional leadership during this complex transition earned him the Army's prestigious Legion of Merit Medal.
Dr. Lockrow's career is marked by an impressive academic and clinical legacy, with numerous peer-reviewed publications, invited manuscripts, abstracts and presentations. His specialization in minimally invasive surgery, particularly robotic surgery, has left an indelible mark on the field. In 1998, he performed the military's first total laparoscopic hysterectomy at Walter Reed and became an early adopter of the Da Vinci Robotic System, starting in 2002. Recognizing the growing importance of minimally invasive techniques, Dr. Lockrow established the Department of Defense's only fellowship program in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery in 2010, serving as its director until 2022.
Dr. Lockrow's influence extends to his contributions to professional organizations and surgical education. He was among the first participants in the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics Surgical Scholars Course, a prestigious program for top obstetrician-gynecologists nationwide. Dr. Lockrow was significantly involved with the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons and has served on the Nominating Committee and as a Board Member at Large for this organization. Dr. Lockrow served as Chair of the ACOG Simulation Consortium. This consortium consists of 20 leading institutions nationally; Dr. Lockrow's nomination to Chair this committee out of a group of nationally recognized leaders in clinical medicine and simulation education is again a true testament to the widespread recognition of his talents.
Dr. Lockrow's efforts have earned widespread recognition, with accolades such as the United States Army Medical Department Order of Military Merit; the Edward A. Zimmermann Award from ACOG in recognition for outstanding contributions to the knowledge of obstetrics and gynecology in the armed forces; the LTG Claire L Chennault Outstanding Faculty Teacher Award; the Carol Johns Medal for Service and Best Teacher award from the Uniformed Services University; the Uniformed Services University Medal, the highest honorary award in recognition for enhancing public knowledge of the USU mission and academic success; and the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology National Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching. In 2024, he was awarded the Luella Klein Lifetime Achievement Award, the highest award from ACOG, which honors an obstetrician-gynecologist who has dedicated their life in a significant way to women's health. He is a fellow of both the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) and the American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOOG).
One of Professor Lockrow's most enduring legacies is rooted in his tireless demonstration of leadership by example and his active development of MHS leaders of today and the future of tomorrow. Looking ahead, Dr. Lockrow remains committed to advancing medical research and innovation. He is currently involved in a research grant focused on developing communication protocols for robotic surgery across different locations. This initiative aims to enable the deployment of subspecialty surgeons in remote and challenging environments, including rural areas, battlefields and humanitarian ships, such as the USNS Mercy and USNS Comfort. In addition to his research, Dr. Lockrow is considering writing a book to share his insights and experiences.
Dr. Lockrow's success is not just a result of his past achievements, but also his ongoing commitment to research. He credits his success to his unwavering determination and one of his inspirations, Randy Pausch, who said, "The brick walls are not there to keep you out. The brick walls are there to see how badly you want to get in." In retirement, Dr. Lockrow plans to balance his professional endeavors with personal pursuits, including golf and other leisure activities. Reflecting on his remarkable career, he leaves behind a legacy of excellence, innovation and service that continues to inspire those around him.
