Dr. Stoner, a distinguished figure in cancer research, has made significant contributions to his field throughout his career. Now a professor emeritus at the Medical College of Wisconsin, a position he has held since 2014, he spent several years teaching on campus after an illustrious career at The Ohio State University between 1992 and 2010. At Ohio State, Dr. Stoner served as Lucius Wing professor of medicine and pathology, associate director of basic research in the Comprehensive Cancer Center, professor and chair of the Division of Environmental Health Sciences and associate dean of research in the School of Public Health.
Earlier in his teaching career, Dr. Stoner was a faculty member at the Medical College of Ohio, where he served as the director of experimental pathology from 1979 to 1992. Before joining academia, he gained valuable experience as a cancer expert at the National Cancer Institute between 1976 and 1979. Dr. Stoner also worked as an assistant and associate research scientist in the Department of Community Medicine at the University of California San Diego from 1970 to 1975.
Dr. Stoner has served as a member and chair of multiple grant and contract review committees for the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society. He has also contributed his expertise to the International Agency for Research in Cancer (IARC) in Lyon, France, where he evaluated multiple environmental agents for cancer-inducing activity. His research has focused on carcinogenesis in animal models and humans, particularly in respiratory and esophageal tissues, and his work on carcinogen metabolism, mutagenesis and cancer chemoprevention has been widely recognized. Disseminating many of his research findings, Dr. Stoner has authored approximately 350 peer-reviewed publications. He has also contributed 60 book chapters and has edited four books. He is one of the most highly cited scientists in his field. In addition, he has trained 21 PhD students and numerous master's degree and undergraduate students.
Dr. Stoner's academic foundation includes a Bachelor of Science in zoology and chemistry from Montana State University in 1964 and a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in microbiology from the University of Michigan in 1968 and 1970, respectively. Initially aspiring to pursue a medical career, Dr. Stoner shifted his focus to graduate studies and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California San Diego.
Active in his professional community, Dr. Stoner was elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is also a member of several other organizations, including the Society of Toxicology, where he served as the president of the Carcinogenesis and Molecular Biology Specialty Sections, and the International Society of Cancer Chemoprevention. This year he will be recognized as a 50-year member of the American Association for Cancer Research.
Throughout his career, Dr. Stoner has received numerous accolades, including a Young Investigator Award from the National Heart and Lung Institute and a Merit Award from the National Cancer Institute. He also received both a Distinguished Alumni Award in 2009 and an honorary doctorate in 2010 from Montana State University.
