Dr. Brazel has been a distinguished figure in the field of geography, with a career spanning several decades. Now recognized as a professor emeritus faculty at Arizona State University since 2011, he began teaching on campus in 1974 as an assistant professor of geography and worked his way up to a full professor. He also chaired the geography department from 1991 to 1997. During his tenure on campus, Dr. Brazel simultaneously served as the State of Arizona's climatologist from 1979 to 1999, contributing significantly to understanding climate and desertification in the Southwest U.S.
Commencing his career in 1968, Dr. Brazel was a research scientist at the U.S.C.E. Lake Survey in Detroit. He then transitioned to academia, teaching geography at the University of Windsor in Ontario, Canada, between 1970 and 1974. Besides his primary career objectives, Dr. Brazel had the opportunity to chair the Arizona Climate Committee in Phoenix in 1980. He also chaired many doctoral student committees in Arizona, supporting emerging scholars in their academic pursuits.
Dr. Brazel's academic journey began with a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics from Rutgers University in New Jersey in 1963, followed by a Master of Arts in geography in 1965. He furthered his education with a Doctor of Philosophy in Geography from the University of Michigan in 1972.
Dr. Brazel's professional affiliations include membership in the Association of American Geographers, the American Meteorological Society and the Royal Meteorological Society. He is a Fellow of the Arizona-Nevada Academy of Science, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Royal Meteorological Society and the American Association of Geographers reflecting his commitment to advancing geographic and atmospheric knowledge.
Throughout his career, Dr. Brazel made substantial contributions to geographic research, notably being one of the first geographers to model aspects of alpine climatology using digital and numerical surface climate models. His research on dust storms and desertification has been pivotal in understanding climate in arid regions. Dr. Brazel's scholarly contributions include numerous articles published in professional journals, further cementing his influence in the field.
Dr. Brazel's achievements have been recognized through various accolades, including receiving grants from the National Science Foundation and a Lifetime Achievement Award from his discipline for his dedication to his teaching profession.
