Currently serving as a deputy sheriff with the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office in Redwood City, California, since 2012, he investigates criminal cases with a global perspective. Mr. Grogan is also involved in patrol and various aspects of corrections, court, transportation and the emergency services bureau as a liaison.
Mr. Grogan's career began in law enforcement as a level I reserve police officer in Los Gatos from 1980 to 1982, specializing in patrol and narcotics, followed by a long tenure as a captain for the City of Millbrae between 1982 and 2012. Before becoming a sheriff, Mr. Grogan was a special agent with the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division from 2004 to 2019. He also served as a special agent in the U.S. Coast Guard between 1997 and 2004, where he became one of the first sea marshals post-9/11, followed by a tenure in the U.S. Army.
In preparation for his future, Mr. Grogan received a Bachelor of Business Administration from Saint Mary's College of California in 1991. He further honed his leadership skills with diplomas from the Los Angeles Police Department West Point Leadership Academy in 2003 and the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, in 2000. Mr. Grogan's certifications from the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training underscore his expertise and passion for police work.
Among his notable civic engagements, Mr. Grogan was the president of the Millbrae Police Activities League from 1993 to 2007. He remains committed to organizations like the Peninsula Police Officers' Association and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
A well-written writer, Mr. Grogan has contributed to literature and media through his book "Grogan's Story: 40 Years a Cop and Soldier" via Page Publishing in 2022. He has also hosted his own podcast with The Overwatch Collective.
Mr. Grogan's military service included deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq, where he was later decorated with numerous commendations, such as the Meritorious Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal. Attributing his military and civilian success to a deep-seated passion for law enforcement, he plans to retire as a deputy sheriff. He hopes to write another book focusing on first responders. Additionally, Mr. Grogan intends to support his son's nonprofit organization.
