Dr. Jean-Baptiste is a distinguished educator and administrator, having served as the director of accreditation for the Nebraska Department of Education since 2023. In this role, he oversees the compliance of schools across Nebraska, ensuring continuous improvement is taking place and supporting both accredited and approved school systems, programs, and educational service units. His responsibilities also include supporting superintendents and school leaders as they navigate the complexities of the rules, regulations, and requirements each school system is required to meet.
Prior to his current position, Dr. Jean-Baptiste had a long-standing career within the Omaha Public Schools. From 1996 to 2022, he served in multiple roles including elementary teacher, student personnel assistant, assistant principal, and ultimately principal. His dedication and connection to his school led to parents and community members demanding the local school board retain him as principal when the interim superintendent planned to move him along with several other principals to different schools. This outbreak of support led to his retention at the school and was both recognized and celebrated in the Omaha World-Herald. He is now sharing his insight and experience regarding leadership in education as an adjunct professor at the University of Nebraska Omaha.
Dr. Jean-Baptiste's academic journey is marked by significant accomplishments that have greatly influenced his professional success. He earned his doctorate in education from the University of Nebraska Omaha in 2023, a milestone that holds special meaning as it aligns with his family's educational legacy at the institution. He obtained a master's degree from the same university and completed his bachelor's degree from Grambling State University where his parents began their educational journey. Overall, he attributes his achievements to the strong educational values instilled in him by his parents along with the support of several mentors.
Dr. Jean-Baptiste is also an Army veteran having served during Desert Storm. He served in the Louisiana National Guard's 527th Engineer Battalion in Ruston, Louisiana. He received the Louisiana National Guard Emergency Medal, the National Defense Medal, the Southwest Asia Service Medal, and the Medal for the Liberation of Kuwait. Upon completing his tour of duty, he returned to Grambling State University to complete his bachelor's degree in education. Serving in the military was how he was able to support himself financially while in college. He views his military experience as being an honor and privilege.
Born in Omaha, Dr. Jean-Baptiste enjoys a variety of hobbies outside of his career, including reading, playing golf, bicycling, music, and playing the saxophone. He has been involved in civic organizations such as Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, served as a teacher leader in bible school, and mentored as a big brother in Big Brothers and Big Sisters of America in the past. He has also supported youth through restorative justice as a trained mediator. In 2014 he was presented with a community service award by the Omaha Chapter of the Links for outstanding dedication to the young people within the Omaha community.
Dr. Jean-Baptiste's personal life is deeply influenced by his family background. His mother was an educator for 51 years before her passing. She continued to contribute to education as a substitute teacher after retirement. She often substituted in his school. His father worked for Housing Urban Development and now substitutes in his retirement. His familial influence has played a significant role in shaping Dr. Jean-Baptiste's dedication to education and community service.
Looking ahead, Dr. Jean-Baptiste aims to continue to work in the educational field. His focus will be on supporting, coaching, and mentoring principals and administrators as they develop into impactful educational leaders in their schools, districts, and communities.
