Prior to her engagement with the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Moein was a research assistant professor at the Institute for Research in Fundamental Sciences (IPM) from 2020 to 2022. During this period, she played a pivotal role in advancing fundamental research in neuroscience, building on her earlier experience as a postdoctoral research fellow at the same institute from 2017 to 2019. Her storied achievements in the field were born of her academic journey, which is marked by a PhD in neuroscience from the Scuola Internazionale Superiore di Studi Avanzati (SISSA) in 2016 and a Doctor of Medicine from Tehran University of Medical Sciences in 2011.

Dr. Moein's groundbreaking work during the COVID-19 pandemic stands out as a testament to her dedication and scientific acumen. In 2020, she identified loss of smell as a distinct symptom and biomarker of COVID-19, a discovery that was crucial in understanding the disease's manifestations. Her ensuing study, published in the International Forum of Allergy and Rhinology, became the most cited paper of that year with more than 900 citations, highlighting its impact on global health awareness.

In addition to her professional achievements, Dr. Moein is actively involved in several industry-related organizations, including Women in Olfactory Science, the Association for Chemoreception Sciences and the Iranian Medical Council. Her commitment to civic engagement is evident through her volunteer efforts at founding the Persian Alliance in North American Healthcare (PANAH) to create a healthcare communication and networking platform for the Persian heritage community. In 2016, she was honored with the Iranian Young Investigator Award in Basic and Clinical Neuroscience by the Ministry of Education.

Outside her professional life, Dr. Moein has a passion for Persian calligraphy, painting, swimming, reading history and classical Persian poetry. Looking to the future, she aims to make smell testing available globally and wants to educate society and physicians about the importance of olfaction and how it changes in certain diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease.
