Dr. Aceves is a distinguished professor of applied mathematics at Southern Methodist University, where he has been a faculty member since 2008. He also had the opportunity to serve as the mathematics department chair for two three-year terms between 2015 and 2021. His expertise in applied mathematics, particularly in nonlinear optics and photonics, has earned him recognition as a leading figure in his field. Dr. Aceves's research focuses on using mathematical tools to explain optical phenomena, including laser interactions and solitons. His contributions have been pivotal in advancing the understanding of optical properties and laser interactions in the atmosphere.

Before his tenure at Southern Methodist University, Dr. Aceves served as the chair of the department of mathematics and statistics at the University of New Mexico from 2004 to 2008. During his time there, he progressed through the ranks from assistant to full professor, a journey that began in 1989. Dr. Aceves's leadership extended beyond administrative roles, as he mentored students and fostered collaborations with researchers worldwide.

Dr. Aceves was named a University of New Mexico Regents lecturer. He has also been engaged with Heriot-Watt University as a visiting research associate and Brown University as a visiting associate professor of applied mathematics.

Dr. Aceves's academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in physics from the National Autonomous University of Mexico in 1981. He then pursued graduate studies in the U.S., earning a Master of Science in applied mathematics from the California Institute of Technology in 1983 and a Doctor of Philosophy in applied mathematics from the University of Arizona in 1988. Dr. Aceves's educational background laid the foundation for his career, enabling him to bridge theoretical concepts with practical applications.

Throughout his career, Dr. Aceves has been actively involved with professional organizations such as the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, where he served as the vice president for science policy, and Optica. His dedication to advancing science is further evidenced by his election as a fellow of the Optical Society of America and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.

In addition to his academic achievements, Dr. Aceves has significantly contributed to civic life. He has volunteered as a soccer coach for young children and delivered free lectures to share his knowledge with broader audiences. He envisions returning to Mexico to contribute to his field and engage with scholars there. As such, Dr. Aceves remains committed to continuous learning and is exploring new research areas, such as epidemics and quantum computing, aiming to give back to his home country by sharing his expertise with future generations.
