His tenure as a visiting scholar at the Population Reference Bureau between 2013 and 2017 also helped shape his reputation as a leading figure in demography. Before these roles, Dr. May served as a visiting fellow at the Center for Global Development from 2012 to 2013 and held pivotal positions at The World Bank between 1997 and 2012, focusing on population and reproductive health in the African region. His career began in 1975 as a high school teacher in Brussels, followed by several United Nations roles in Haiti and New Caledonia.
Throughout his career, Dr. May has been actively involved in various scientific advisory councils and boards, including POPDEVINTER in Paris and the Berlin Institute for Population and Development.
Dr. May's educational background laid a strong foundation for his illustrious career. His academic journey began with a Bachelor of Arts in modern history from the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium in 1973, followed by a graduate diploma in demography on campus in 1975. He later obtained a Master of Arts in demography, magna cum laude, from the Catholic University of Louvain in 1985 and a Doctor of Philosophy in demography, summa cum laude, from Université René Descartes, Paris-V, in 1996. Dr. May's bilingual proficiency in English and French has been instrumental in his international collaborations and teaching endeavors.
Beyond his primary career objectives, Dr. May's membership in professional organizations, such as the Population Association of America and the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population, underscores his commitment to advancing in his field.
A prolific author and editor, Dr. May has co-authored influential papers on U.S. population projections and co-edited volumes such as the "International Handbook of Population Policies." His book "Africa's Population: In Search of a Demographic Dividend," co-edited with Dr. Hans Groth, highlights his focus on demographic challenges in Sub-Saharan Africa. Dr. May continues contributing to scholarly journals and serves on editorial committees, ensuring his insights reach a broad audience.
Dr. May's numerous achievements have been recognized with several accolades, including those from The World Bank for his impactful work on population projects. In 2012, he received a Global Media Award for Best Book in Population for "World Population Policies: Their Origin, Evolution, and Impact."
