Leveraging many years of former success, Mr. Donnelly worked for himself as a gaffer and lighting director from 1999 to 2001, during which he developed a keen understanding of lighting techniques that would later enhance his cinematography work. Notable among his cinematography credits is his work on the Student Academy Award-winning short "A-alike," directed by Randall Dottin in 2003. Additionally, he gained valuable experience in the technical aspects of film production as a self-employed key grip between 1994 and 2000.
Mr. Donnelly's early career included positions as a stage manager at Peter Corbett and Company from 1990 to 1994 and as a production assistant at Rick Levine Productions, beginning in 1988. These foundational roles provided him with a comprehensive understanding of the industry.
In preparation for his career, Mr. Donnelly received a Bachelor of Arts in cinema studies from San Francisco State University in 1988. This education laid the groundwork for his career, equipping him with the knowledge and practical skills necessary for success in filmmaking. Mr. Donnelly is also certified as a director of photography by the International Cinematographers Guild Local 600 and the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Local 600, credentials that underscore his professional expertise.
Throughout his career, Mr. Donnelly has received numerous accolades for his work. Notably, he won a coveted Emmy Award for a daytime commercial and a Telly Award for a music video he directed and shot. His feature film "Divergence," which he wrote, directed and shot in 2007, garnered critical acclaim and was featured at several prestigious film festivals. The film's success was also recognized with multiple awards, including Best Narrative Feature at the GI Film Festival and the Staten Island Film Festival.
In addition to his professional achievements, Mr. Donnelly is a member of the International Cinematographers Guild. He is also actively involved in various civic-minded organizations. Furthermore, Mr. Donnelly enjoys reading about history and archaeology, interests that provide him with inspiration for his creative projects.
