Dr. Mossey, a distinguished expert in psychiatric epidemiology, aging research and pain, has made significant contributions to her field over a career spanning more than 35 years. Honored with the title professor emerita at Drexel University Dornsife School of Public Health since 1994, she has been instrumental in advancing the understanding of public health through her research and teaching. Her role involved conducting research, teaching graduate classes and providing guidance and advice to students. Prior to her tenure at Drexel University, she served as a professor at the Medical College of Pennsylvania, Allegheny Health Systems from 1986 to 1994. Her work during this period laid the foundation for her later achievements.

Dr. Mossey's groundbreaking research in 1982 on self-rated health marked a pivotal moment in her career. Her study demonstrated that self-rated health is a strong predictor of mortality risk, particularly among older populations. This pioneering work was the first to use longitudinal data to predict mortality while considering both objective health measures and self-rated health. The study's findings have since inspired thousands of subsequent studies exploring the relationship between self-rated health and various health outcomes.

Dr. Mossey's educational background has been fundamental to her success. She earned a Master of Science in Nursing in psychiatric mental health nursing from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing in 1993. Earlier, she completed a Master of Public Health and a doctorate in epidemiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1976. Her academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Columbia University School of Nursing in 1967 and a Bachelor of Arts from Mount Holyoke College in 1965.

Furthering her field-specific expertise, Dr. Mossey is an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Pain Medicine and the Global Consortium for the Prevention of Depression. She also holds a certification as a registered nurse from Columbia University School of Nursing.

Beyond her academic accomplishments, Dr. Mossey is deeply involved in civic activities, serving as a home gardener provider to local food banks and the National Wildlife Federation. She has also contributed as a member of the board of directors for Astro Artists. Overall, she attributes both her personal and professional success to her tenacity, intelligence and supportive environment. She is particularly grateful to a mentor when applying for graduate studies who recommended she focus on epidemiology rather than public health nursing.

In her personal life, Dr. Mossey enjoys gardening, walking and listening to classic musicals and opera. Looking ahead in her career, she aims to complete a book on self-rated health to promote its use as a significant risk factor in clinical settings globally. She is also committed to improving the understanding and treatment of non-cancer pain, having already authored two book chapters that dealt with the management of pain medicine in vulnerable populations. Furthermore, she is actively involved with the Global Consortium for the Prevention of Depression to develop preventive strategies for depression.
