A distinguished figure in the field of pharmacology, Dr. Aguilar currently serves as the chief operating officer at SOHM Inc., a California-based pharmaceutical manufacturing and marketing firm. His role involves attending meetings, overseeing various corporate divisions and developing operational strategies that align with the company's objectives. Additionally, he builds and maintains client relationships and optimizes supply chain management and quality control.
Dr. Aguilar's work has been widely recognized for its impact on cancer treatment. Notably, he contributed to the development of a novel gene editing tool positioned to be best-in-class, which has demonstrated effectiveness in killing cancer cells. He aims to expand this technology, utilizing AI to enhance multiple phases of drug development, ensuring that the right drug is developed for the right patient to achieve optimal outcomes.
Before starting his tenure at SOHM Inc., Dr. Aguilar held the position of West Coast sales manager at Particle Measuring Systems in 2023. Prior to that, he was the head of chemistry, manufacturing and control (CMC) at Kiromic Biopharma Inc., where he played a pivotal role in advancing regenerative medicine technologies. His career also includes a significant period as the chief executive officer at Exeligen Scientific Inc. from 2015 to 2021, during which he identified key sales markets and ensured all research and development projects were completed on schedule.
Dr. Aguilar honed his scientific and management skills during his time as a scientist at Cellecta Inc. and as a consultant for a private stem cell manufacturing entity. From 2015 to 2016, he was responsible for identifying prospective investment opportunities as an analyst with Tech Coast Angels. His early career was marked by a postdoctoral fellowship at University of California (UC) San Diego from 2012 to 2014 and his role as a graduate student researcher at the University of Arizona from 2007 to 2012.
Dr. Aguilar's success in the field stems from his equally robust academic foundation. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy in pharmacology from the University of Arizona in 2012, a Bachelor of Science in cell biology from UC San Diego in 2003 and an Associate of Arts from Southwestern Community College District in 2000. His commitment to continuous learning is evident through certifications in technology and licensing from UC San Diego, a certificate in executive leadership from Stanford University and recognition as a fellow in the life sciences by the National Academy of Education.
In addition to his professional achievements, Dr. Aguilar is actively involved with industry-related organizations such as the Society of Toxicology and serves on the board of the American Association for Cancer Research. A second-generation U.S. citizen of Mexican descent, Dr. Aguilar shares close bonds with his family, who have been a consistent source of inspiration and support. He is significantly influenced by his brothers, particularly George Jr., who lives with cerebral palsy and has been a source of motivation throughout Dr. Aguilar's life. Additionally, Dr. Aguilar draws heavily on the memory of his late father for inspiration, honoring his legacy through his work. Meanwhile, his uncle Richard Aguilar, a highly respected pediatrician, has also been a guiding force in his life and continues to offer support and encouragement as he forges his own path.
When Dr. Aguilar was growing up, his parents taught him to always stand up to bullies, a philosophy he now applies as he persists in his efforts to defeat cancer despite facing obstacles such as limited funding. Having stood by the bedside as someone received the devastating news that a beloved family member might succumb to the disease, he is committed to fighting back. He also draws on his mother and sister-in-law, both breast cancer survivors, for motivation, while his wife has supported him throughout the entirety of his journey.
Dr. Aguilar attributes his success to his family's support and Christian faith, which have guided him throughout his career. Looking toward the future, he is committed to integrating artificial intelligence with patient data to identify the most effective drugs for each individual. He also hopes to instill in the next generation of health care workers the importance of maintaining a patient-first mentality. He urges those professionals to prioritize safety, efficacy and compassion over cost or budget to ensure that their work always serves the best interests of those in need.
