Dr. Tyler has established a distinguished career as a professor of otolaryngology and of speech pathology and audiology at the University of Iowa in Iowa City since 1981. His expertise is underscored by his extensive academic background and professional affiliations. With numerous contributions to his university and the broader field of otolaryngology and audiology, he has been a significant force in his field, reflecting his dedication to advancing knowledge and practice in the areas of cochlear implants, tinnitus and hyperacusis.

Dr. Tyler's academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in communication disorders and a Master of Science in audiology conferred by the University of Western Ontario in 1974. He then pursued studies at the University of Iowa, where he obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in psychoacoustics in 1978. Additionally, he holds a certification in Clinical Competence in Audiology.

Dr. Tyler first worked at the Institute of Hearing Research in the United Kingdom, where he acquired grants to investigate some of the first single-channel cochlear implants. He received the British Society of Audiology's T.S. Littler Award. In 1978, he was honored as a visiting scholar at the Swedish Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. At the urging of Dr. Brian McCabe, he returned to Iowa in 1981 to develop a cochlear implant research program and invited his professors in statistics, psychology and audiology to participate in this endeavor.

In 1993, Dr. Tyler edited "Cochlear Implants: Audiological Foundations," the first book on the subject. With contributions extending across the globe, he has shared his expertise as a visiting professor at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia and the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa. Additionally, he held an honorary professorship at Jinzhou Medical University in China, where he helped establish the first cochlear implant center in the country. He has included colleagues to develop the Spatial Hearing Questionnaire and Tinnitus Primary Functions Questionnaire, which have been translated worldwide.

Dr. Tyler has been recognized with a Visiting Fellow Award from the Commission of the European Communities, a 3M Faculty Grant, a Burrows Welcome Research Grant and a NATO Collaborative Research Grant. Significantly, in 2016, he was awarded an honorary professorship at the University of Parma for his "contributions to the evaluation, development and success of Cochlear Implants worldwide." These accolades highlight his global influence and commitment to sharing knowledge across borders.

Dr. Tyler's efforts have been celebrated on a personal level as well. He fondly recalls Graeme Clark awarding him a digeridoo; Jim Patrick taking him sailing around the Sydney Opera House; Bill House cooking for him on his yacht; and Irwin and Ingeborg Hochmair taking him skiing—all in recognition of his cochlear implant work.

Dr. Tyler has been an active member of several organizations, including the Acoustical Society of America, the American Speech and Hearing Association, the American Tinnitus Association and the American Auditory Society, demonstrating his commitment to helping those with hearing loss. He hosts an International Conference on Tinnitus and Hyperacusis and has hosted additional international conferences on hearing aids and cochlear implants. He has made over 400 scholarly contributions to professional journals.

Outside of his professional life, Dr. Tyler is proud to have restored the Secrest 1883 Octagonal Barn, a historic structure in Iowa. Looking ahead, he intends to continue making significant contributions to the field of audiology and otolaryngology.
