JOHNSON, VT, March 26, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Ann Marie B. Bahr has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Bahr, a distinguished academic and scholar, has made significant contributions to the field of religious studies. Her career spans over three decades, primarily at South Dakota State University, where she served as professor of religious studies on campus from 1988 to 2012, and as an online emerita professor until 2019. During her tenure, she was instrumental in developing new courses such as Middle East Studies and Geography of Religions, which broadened student understanding of contemporary issues. Her dedication to interreligious dialogue and world peace was evident through her research and committee work aimed at integrating religious studies with other academic programs.
Before her long-standing role at South Dakota State University, Dr. Bahr's academic journey included instructor positions at LaSalle University, Delaware County Community College, and Glassboro State College (now Rowan University). These roles provided her with a diverse exposure to academic settings that enriched her teaching in religious studies. While at South Dakota State University, she served as the chief consultant for Australian publishing firm Millennium House's illustrated guide on Christianity, showcasing her international leadership and expertise in the field.
Dr. Bahr's professional affiliations include serving as past president of the Upper Midwest Region of the American Academy of Religion, and on the board of the South Dakota Committee on the Humanities. Most recently she served on the development committee of the Society of Biblical Literature. Her involvement in these organizations underscores her commitment to advancing religious scholarship and fostering community engagement.
Her educational background laid a strong foundation for her career achievements. Dr. Bahr earned a Doctor of Philosophy in religion from Temple University in 1988, a Master of Arts in religious studies from Stanford University in 1976 and a Bachelor of Arts in geology from Lawrence University in 1972. She attributes much of her success to the self-confidence she gained from her early academic experiences. Being invited to Washington, D.C. as a U.S. Presidential Scholar in 1969 played a significant role in shaping her outlook. This opportunity helped her develop a belief that, despite the challenges of rigorous study, hard work can lead to great achievement.
Throughout her life, Dr. Bahr has pursued knowledge that incorporates facts and expertise but leads beyond these to wisdom. She seeks insights similar to those found in the world's religions and aims to address the fundamental question of how we should live. This pursuit not only informed her academic journey but also inspired her commitment to a lifestyle dedicated to protecting the planet from climate change—including her avocation as owner of a small farm.
Dr. Bahr's academic publications include articles in esteemed journals such as the Chronicle of Higher Education and the Journal of Ecumenical Studies. She has enjoyed a long career as a public intellectual, including a weekly column in The Brookings Register which ran for six years (1999-2005) and a young adult series on world religions for Chelsea House Publishers (2004-2005). She played a key role in the Wingspread Conference titled Religion and Public Life: Engaging Higher Education. Her service work in Brookings, SD was recognized with the Dorothey and Eugene T. Butler Human Rights Award in 2012.
In her personal life, Dr. Bahr enjoys tending her small farm, gardening, music and reading. She is also actively involved as a musician at her church and in community fund raisers for repairs on local churches, illustrating her commitment to local-level initiatives. Looking ahead, Dr. Bahr aims to focus on her publications and reflect on her experiences from her lifelong journey.
