A distinguished figure in geophysics, Dr. Knapp has channeled her expertise into her work as an associate dean for research at Oklahoma State University's College of Arts and Sciences since 2023. As associate dean, she has been pivotal in overseeing research, teaching, and service duties while developing and teaching two courses that have become integral to the curriculum. Her expertise in geophysics, particularly in the methods for finding oil, gas, groundwater resources, and minerals, has been instrumental in her career. Dr. Knapp's journey at Oklahoma State University began in 2018 when she joined as a professor and head of the Boone Pickens School of Geology.
Before her tenure at Oklahoma State University, Dr. Knapp was a professor at the University of South Carolina from 2000 to 2018. Dr. Knapp's academic credentials are impressive, having earned a Doctor of Philosophy in geophysics from Cornell University in 2000. Her decision to attend Cornell was influenced by her research focus on mountain formation during her time in Romania. The resources and funding available at Cornell were crucial for her large-scale research projects. She also holds a Bachelor of Science in geophysical engineering, which she received in 1988 from the University of Bucharest.
Her professional affiliations include serving as director of the Earth Sciences and Resources Institute from 2013 to 2018 and being actively involved with organizations such as the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, The Geological Society of America, and the American Geophysical Union. These memberships have provided Dr. Knapp with collaboration and knowledge exchange platforms within her field.
Dr. Knapp's contributions extend beyond academia into civic engagement and community service. She has been a faculty advisor for the Society of Exploration Geophysicists Student Chapter at the University of South Carolina since 2004 and serves on the board of directors for the Oklahoma Geological Foundation. Her commitment to community outreach is evident through her involvement in STEM days at local schools and donations to support local people in need.
Throughout her career, Dr. Knapp has received numerous accolades, including the Outstanding Educator Award in 2024, the Distinguished Undergraduate Research Mentor Award in 2013, the Rising Star Research Award in 2011, The Michael J.
