MUNCIE, IN, March 27, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Akilah Shukura Nosakhere has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Ms. Nosakhere has dedicated her career to library science, culminating as the library director at Muncie Public Library, from 2017 to 2024. During her tenure, she ensured the smooth operation of the library and mentored young librarians, fostering a new generation of professionals. Ms. Nosakhere's expertise in migrating print to online resources and library design has been instrumental in modernizing library services. It has also been one of her most significant accomplishments.
Before working in Muncie, Ms. Nosakhere served as the director of library services and as an associate professor with tenure at New Mexico State University Carlsbad from 2009 to 2016. Her leadership also extended to managing the reference and research division at the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library between 2005 and 2009. Concurrently, Ms. Nosakhere was an adjunct faculty member at Shorter University metro Atlanta campuses, where she taught information literacy skills to graduate and undergraduate students from 2004 to 2009.
Ms. Nosakhere's earlier career included positions such as special collections librarian and print curator at the Atlanta University Center Consortium between 2002 and 2005 and head of collections and subject liaison librarian at Georgia State University from 1995 to 2002. She began her professional journey as an information manager at NAC International Inc., a provider of engineering, consulting, and nuclear fuel management solutions from 1987 to 1989 before pivoting into academic library management.
In preparation for her future, Ms. Nosakhere received a Bachelor of Science in history and social studies education in 1983 and a Master of Arts in secondary education in 1984 from Ball State University. Subsequently, she received a Master of Library Science in academic and special library administration from Clark Atlanta University in 1987.
Ms. Nosakhere is a member of Kiwanis International. She also enjoys creating community initiatives through her business, ArtRize LLC, which aims to use art to promote creativity among youth and seniors. ArtRize LLC is a vibrant center for cultural engagement through events like Jazz Night and A History of Black Comedy, which feature recordings by Jackie Moms Mabley and Pigmeat Markham. Her passion for reading complements her vision for Art Rise LLC as a vibrant center for cultural engagement through events like Count Basie Night or Duke Ellington Night. By bringing authors and artists from Indiana into the fold, Ms. Nosakhere seeks to enrich the community's cultural landscape through transformative art experiences.
During her tenure in her field, Ms. Nosakhere was published several times, including a chapter on black librarians in academic libraries. She also co-edited "The 21st-Century Black Librarian in America: Issues and Challenges."
Highlighting her career achievements, Ms. Nosakhere was recognized in 1998 by Georgia State University Student Programs with the Fannie Lou Hamer Marcus Garvey service award and in 2006, The Atlanta Chapter of National Women of Achievement presented her with the Profile of Prominence Award for Excellence. The Black Caucus American Library Association awarded Ms. Nosakhere with an Outstanding Contributions to Publishing Citation in 2013.
