HOOVER, AL, March 27, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- James N. Phillips, PE, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. With 44 years of experience in engineering, Mr. Phillips established himself as an expert in his field. Throughout his career, he specialized in several areas, including domestic and international project management, industrial power, control systems, energy cost, energy efficiency, capital cost control, electrical safety, workforce development, team building, regulatory compliance and reporting. He is a proven leader in his field, and having served as an electrical engineer, professional engineer, project manager and department head, he improved efficiency and added exceptional value to the industry.
Mr. Phillips spent 27 years at Vulcan Materials Company, where he was the manager of engineering from 1996 to 2011 and project engineer from 1984 to 1996. In this role, he supervised all engineering curricula, including mechanical, civil and structural engineering. He spent 15 years managing the entire department and also participated in electrical design as needed. Mr. Phillips' most notable career achievement occurred during his time at Vulcan Materials, namely when he participated in the design and construction of a major international production facility. In supervising a later augmentation project, Mr. Phillips successfully implemented changes that led to a substantial increase in production levels for that same facility.
Mr. Phillips left Vulcan Materials 15 years ago to pursue a consulting career. Before fully retiring in 2021, he was on staff with Yates Engineers LLC, where he held the title of senior electrical engineer and was the electrical engineering manager from 2012 to 2018. Prior to his lengthy tenure at Vulcan Materials, Mr. Phillips began his career as an electrical project engineer at LTV Steel, formerly Republic Steel, where he was employed from 1977 to 1984.
Mr. Phillips holds a Master of Business Administration from Jacksonville State University and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in power systems, computer design and programming from the University of Alabama. Prior to retirement, he was licensed as a professional engineer in 30 states and still maintains membership with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Before retiring, Mr. Phillips' was also a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association, the National Stone Association and a predecessor organization of the Association for Iron & Steel Technologies.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Mr. Phillips has devoted ample time to civic engagement. From 2000 to 2011, he served as a construction volunteer with Habitat for Humanity International. A devoted supporter of the Boy Scouts of America, Mr. Phillips volunteered for their Greater Alabama Council in several capacities, having inhabited the roles of den leader, assistant cubmaster, cubmaster, committee member, troop committee chair and certified adult trainer. Additionally, he served as a volunteer with the Homewood Patriot Band Parents Association from 2000 to 2008 including a term as president, and as chairperson of the Automation Committee for the National Stone Association. Mr. Phillips has also offered his time volunteering for the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR).
Mr. Phillips attributes his success to his parents and the work ethic they instilled in him. They always emphasized the idea that all achievements come from hard work. Looking toward the future, Mr. Phillips intends to travel more, cherish time with his family and make meaningful contributions to the SAR and other civic organizations. He is also looking forward to spending more time on his favorite hobbies, which include genealogy, woodworking, and playing the clarinet with an adult concert band.
