ATLANTA, GA, March 27, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Fatima Donia Mili, MD, PhD, medical epidemiologist with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, was selected by Marquis Who's Who for a prominent feature in the Washington/Baltimore Edition of The Wall Street Journal, published on February 26, 2025.
Since 2009, Dr. Mili has served the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as a medical epidemiologist, studying the causes, distributions and control of diseases in human populations. Within the CDC, she worked in the divisions of blood disorders and global human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and tuberculosis. She also trained junior scientists in epidemiology and biostatistics. Dr. Mili began working with the CDC in 1991, serving as an instructor in the Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) summer course after completing a postdoctoral fellowship in epidemiology.
Dr. Mili was born in Carthage, Tunisia. A native bilingual speaker, she relocated with her family to Switzerland after her father was elected secretary general of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), an agency of the United Nations. Pursuing interests in medicine and research, she attended the University of Geneva, earning a Doctor of Medicine in 1981. After several years practicing medicine, she was invited by Emory University to come to the United States to study epidemiology. She completed a Master of Public Health in 1989 and the CDC's Epidemic Intelligence Service program in 1991. She continued working as an instructor with the CDC for the Epidemiology in Action course before joining Emory University as an instructor.
Excelling in her career, Dr. Mili pursued a Doctor of Philosophy in epidemiology at Emory University, graduating in 1997 from Laney Graduate School. During her studies, she served as a graduate teaching assistant and lecturer in the department of epidemiology, gaining further experience as an educator. Continuing to teach, she joined the Morehouse School of Medicine as a lecturer in the department of medicine and the department of preventive medicine in 1998.
Dr. Mili attributes her success to her family environment. Groomed at an early age in science and raised with three brothers and one younger sister, she entered a boarding school in Annecy, France, at age 11. She excelled in philosophy, languages, classical piano and dance, and gymnastics in addition to her academic studies, which developed her interest in becoming a research scientist as she entered medical school.
Reflecting on her experience, Dr. Mili is proud of her most notable achievements: her research and published articles, which focus on genetic and chronic diseases, HIV and COVID-19. Her pivotal work examining health disparities experienced by racial and ethnic minorities and underserved populations in the U.S. led to several high-profile publications in 2000, which garnered the attention of the U.S. Congress as a foundation in addressing health care inequality. With the emergence of COVID-19, Dr. Mili deployed on the CDC-wide COVID-19 emergency response, where she led teams of epidemiologists and statisticians to provide domestic vaccination data for the development of national vaccination programs and informed COVID-19 policy decisions in the U.S.
In recognition of her work in her field, Dr. Mili received the Excellence in Epidemiology Award – Domestic from the CDC in 2021, the Excellence in Emergency Response Toby Merlin Award – Domestic in 2021, and the Early Career Author Award from the Research Triangle Institute in 2004. To remain current in her field, she maintains membership with the Epidemic Intelligence Service Alumni Association (EISAA).
Looking to the future, Dr. Mili ultimately intends to retire as she plans to participate in activities, including community service, consulting or teaching. In her leisure time, she enjoys Mediterranean cooking with her husband, bike riding, swimming and playing classical piano.
