He holds the esteemed position of Julius Schlesinger professor of operations management at the NYU Stern School of Business, where he has been a faculty member since 1997. In this role, he is dedicated to teaching, conducting research and providing service both within and outside the university. His contributions extend to serving as an editor for various academic journals and consulting with financial institutions.

Prior to starting his tenure at NYU, Dr. Pinedo served as a professor in the Industrial Engineering and Operations Research Department at Columbia University in the City of New York from 1982 to 1997 and as an assistant professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology from 1980 to 1982. His diverse career also includes a notable consultancy role with Goldman Sachs from 2000 to 2008, where he focused on operational risk and built long-lasting relationships with Xerox, International Paper and the Hong Kong Jockey Club. His work in this area has been vital in making scheduling more accessible to industry professionals, particularly in large sectors like airlines and manufacturing.

An accomplished author, Dr. Pinedo has written several influential books that are widely used in graduate, master's and PhD-level courses. His book "Scheduling: Theory, Algorithms, and Systems," published by Springer in 2002, is considered a seminal work in the field. Additionally, he authored "Planning and Scheduling in Manufacturing and Services" in 2005, further cementing his reputation as a leading authority on scheduling.

Dr. Pinedo's own academic journey began with a Master of Science in mechanical engineering from the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands in 1973. He then pursued advanced studies at the University of California, Berkeley, earning a Master of Science in operations research in 1976 and a doctorate in operations research in 1978. He is especially grateful to Professor Sheldon Ross, his PhD advisor at Berkeley, for his steadfast mentorship and encouragement.

To stay aware of the latest developments within his field, Dr. Pinedo is a fellow of both the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) and the Production and Operations Management Society (POMS). His dedication to advancing knowledge in his field and society at large continues to inspire his students and fellow professionals alike.

Outside of his professional endeavors, Dr. Pinedo cherishes spending quality time with his wife, three children and grandchildren. Looking to the future, he hopes to continue his impactful work at NYU Stern School of Business while completing the newest edition of his scheduling book. He also aims to expand his research projects with companies across Korea, Hong Kong and China.
