His role involves optimizing cash flow, managing inventory tracking during the barrels' aging lifecycle, and the removal and resale at the end of their life, as well as managing the relationship with the lenders who provide the financing for their winery and distillery clients. Alongside his work at Legacy Barrel Services, Mr. Garcia has owned Blackthorn Enterprises (d/b/a Stover Oaks Winery) since 2002. His journey in the wine industry includes purchasing a winery, securing a job, learning winemaking, managing a tasting room and eventually selling the winery and vineyard property. These achievements underscore his complete knowledge of vineyard management and winemaking. Additionally, he served as the area chief financial officer for SharpCFO from 2020 to 2021 and as a sales agent and consultant for H&A Barrel Management from 2015 until 2018.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Garcia held significant roles such as the controller and chief financial officer at HALL Wines between 2009 and 2015 as well as serving as a wine educator in 2015. Prior to HALL Wines, he was also the chief financial officer and general manager at Frank Johnson Vineyards (d/b/a Roshambo Winery) from 2005 to 2009. Before venturing into the wine industry, Mr. Garcia was chief financial officer at First Alarm Inc. from 2002 until 2003, chief financial officer at Sihl USA from 2001 to 2002, and vice president and chief financial officer at Lancaster Bingo Company between 1998 and 2000, which further solidified his expertise in finance.
Prior to joining Lancaster Bingo Company, Mr. Garcia spent his foundational years in division and group finance director roles at Avery Dennison from 1985 to 1998 and as a finance director and group controller at PepsiCo and North American Van Lines from 1979 until 1985. He began his career with the Financial Management Development Program at Procter & Gamble between 1972 and 1979, during which time he gained valuable experience in finance and accounting that would shape his future endeavors.
Forging the path for Mr. Garcia's professional journey was his academic background. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in marketing from the Carl H. Lindner College of Business at the University of Cincinnati in 1970, followed by a Master of Business Administration in finance and marketing from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business in 1972. His initial enrollment in the College of Engineering at the University of Cincinnati before switching to business studies illustrates his adaptability — a trait that has been pivotal throughout his career. His exposure to wine prior to moving to California during his time at North American Van Lines and Avery Dennison sparked an interest that would later become a meaningful part of his professional life.
Beyond his primary work, Mr. Garcia contributes to his industry through various associations. He holds membership with the Association of African American Vintners (AAAV), the American Craft Spirits Association, and the American Distilling Institute.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Mr. Garcia is actively involved in civic organizations. He has served as the vice president and treasurer of the AAAV since 2004 and was on the board of directors for the Napa Valley College Foundation from 2012 to 2015, demonstrating his commitment to supporting diversity within the wine industry.
