As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Zia is a board-certified physician, internist and medical oncologist affiliated with the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), in Bethesda, Maryland, where she has dedicated over 20 years to advancing the fields of women's malignancies and women's health, as well as integrative and whole person health, as they relate to the management of patients across the cancer control continuum. Dr. Zia joined the Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis (DCTD) in 2007 as a Medical Officer, and currently serves as The Director of the Section of Clinical Research and Education in Integrative Oncology. She is an active member of the Warren G Magnuson Clinical Center Medical Staff, and continues patient care through the Center for Cancer Research (CCR) Women's Malignancies Branch (WMB), where she is an associate investigator on several breast and gynecologic cancer clinical trials. In this role, Dr. Zia has been instrumental in developing new therapies for cancer patients.

Throughout her tenure at the NCI, Dr. Zia's expertise in women's malignancies and integrative health has earned her recognition and respect within the medical community. Her most significant personal accomplishments include those opportunities where she is able to successfully treat patients who have exhausted all other options before turning to the NIH for hope. Although cure is not always possible, Dr. Zia is most satisfied when patients experience improvement, or even stability of their disease, allowing precious time with family, friends, and loved ones.

Dr. Zia holds a passionate desire to strengthen the delivery of well-rounded care to cancer patients. Her role at the NIH provides unique opportunities to promote and further investigate integrative modalities that support the whole person cancer care model, a patient-centered approach that considers multiple factors that promote health or disease. It means empowering individuals, families, communities, and populations to improve their health in multiple interconnected biological, behavioral, social, and environmental areas. It empowers patients to manage their disease and improve their quality of life by engaging in life-style changing behaviors, such as improved nutrition, physical activity, as well as social and community engagement. Dr. Zia is an active participant in Trans-NIH and Trans-HHS committees, spearheading the investigation and development of modalities supporting this cancer care model.

Before joining the NCI, Dr. Zia was a community physician from 2003 - 2006, and covered the oncology service at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Virginia, providing exceptional care to her patients.

Dr. Zia's academic journey includes a B.A. Honors in Psychology, on a pre-medical track, from The George Washington University Columbian College of Arts and Sciences, and an M.S. in Microbiology and Immunology from The George Washington University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. During this time she conducted cancer research under the auspices of Dr. Terry W. Moody in the GWU Department of Biochemistry, as well as at the National Institutes of Health, solidifying her desire to participate in bench-to-bedside translational research as a career. She then went on to fulfill her lifelong dream of becoming a physician, graduating from The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, receiving her Doctor of Medicine (MD) Degree in the spring of 1997. Dr. Zia then completed a residency in Internal Medicine from The George Washington University Hospital. From there, Dr. Zia's academic journey took her to the National Instititutes of Health, where she continued her training, completing a dual fellowship in Hematology and Oncology from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). She gained invaluable experience in oncology drug development and clinical trials during her tenure as a Medical Oncology Branch Fellow, and through participation in a Cancer Therapy Evaluation Program (CTEP/DCTD) Fellowship.

In addition to her academic achievements, Dr. Zia holds certifications that have furthered her expertise and credibility in her field. She is Board Certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Physician Specialties (ABPS), and has also earned certification as a Principal Investigator through the Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP). She has authored numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals, contributing valuable knowledge to the medical community. In addition to her work-related initiatives, she is actively involved in civic-minded organizations, including Islamic Relief, where she volunteers her time for social work, as well as participates in free clinics, providing health care for underserved communities.

Dr. Zia dedicates a significant amount of her time participating in the education of our future leaders in science and medicine. She is the innovator and director of a course on women's health, which fills an important educational gap in the curriculum of students, residents, and fellows at the NIH; furthermore, Dr. Zia serves on the organizing committee of the premier NIH course "Translational Research in Clinical Oncology" and delivers the breast cancer lecture within that course. In addition, Dr. Zia participates in staff and student education during her time in clinic, and as a part of vibrant journal club presentations and discussions.

In recognition of her dedicated work, Dr. Zia was nominated by her peers, and chosen to be honored in the 2024 edition of Washingtonian Magazine as a Top Doctor in the field of Oncology. She attributes her remarkable achievements to the unwavering encouragement, support, and heartfelt prayers she received from her beloved parents during her rigorous academic journey, as well as the continued support she receives from her husband, children, and colleagues.
