NORTH BERGEN, NJ, April 01, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Holly F. Lofton has been selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Lofton is a distinguished expert in obesity medicine, currently serving as the director of the medical weight management program at NYU Grossman School of Medicine since 2012. In this role, she oversees a comprehensive weight management program that includes specialized diets, medications and bariatric surgery options. She is deeply involved in clinical research on obesity medications and weight-related conditions, contributing significantly to advancements in treatment guidelines. She is also dedicated to teaching and mentoring residents, students and practicing physicians on weight management and addressing weight bias in health care.

Prior to her current position, Dr. Lofton was a weight management physician at Geisinger Health System from 2008 to 2011. Her tenure there was marked by her commitment to patient care and her involvement in developing innovative approaches to obesity treatment. Additionally, she served as a fellowship director at both Geisinger Medical Center and NYU, where she trained doctors to become specialists in obesity medicine.

Dr. Lofton's research contributions are notable, particularly as the principal investigator for the SELECT trial for semaglutide and the SURMOUNT-1 trial for tirzepatide. Her work has been instrumental in shaping the understanding and treatment of obesity. She is also involved in creating the board certification exam for obesity medicine and has produced educational videos for Medscape.

Dr. Lofton's professional affiliations include membership in the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, the Academy of Black Women Physicians and the Academy of Black Gastroenterologists and Hepatologists. These memberships reflect her commitment to advancing the field of obesity medicine and supporting diversity within it.

Her academic journey began with a bachelor's degree in biology from Boston University in 2000, followed by earning her MD from the Medical College of Georgia. She is a certified obesity medicine specialist, a credential that underscores her expertise in this critical area of health care. Dr. Lofton attributes much of her success to having a strong team, including excellent research assistants and coordinators, as well as the support of her department chair at NYU, Dr. Christine J. Ren-Fielding.

One of the highlights of Dr. Lofton's career has been publishing an investigator-initiated paper for which she designed the protocol and conducted the analysis. It examined the effect of a medication called Liraglutide on patients who regain weight after gastric bypass surgery and was published in the Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases journal. Her findings contributed to updated guidelines from surgical societies, such as the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, recommending anti-obesity medications for patients who have not met weight loss goals after surgery.

Beyond her professional achievements, Dr. Lofton is actively involved with civic-minded organizations such as Digital Health New York, the Obesity Working Group and the Obesity Action Coalition. She also served as a medical director for the NFL Alumni Weight Loss Challenge. Her accolades include being named a National Obesity Research Scholar in 2019.

Dr. Lofton balances her professional life with personal interests such as exercising, designing home projects and spending time with her two children. Inspired by her own weight loss journey during her preteen years and supported by her mother's guidance in managing weight and diabetes, Dr. Lofton has dedicated her career to helping others navigate similar challenges. Looking ahead, she plans to continue partnering with advocacy groups and political venues to improve public access to various weight management treatments while conducting more trials on weight management medications to reduce obesity rates among adults and adolescents in the United States.
