Currently serving as the director of economic development at the Greater Wyoming Valley Chamber of Commerce, Ms. Mohamed has distinguished herself as an expert in social innovation and economic development. During this time, she became certified as an Enterprise Design Thinking Practitioner through IBM, fueling her abilities in creative problem-solving and innovative program design. She quickly advanced to the role of economic development specialist from 2020 to 2022, wherein she customized projects and initiatives aimed at addressing social, regional and workplace challenges. She was further elevated to director in 2022, making her the first female and woman of color to lead economic development in her organization's 140-year history. Moreover, at just 23 years old, she was also the youngest.
In addition to her work at the Chamber of Commerce, Ms. Mohamed has played an active role in her family's business, Kamal Trucking Inc., since 2012. Her diverse experience also includes positions as a social media management intern at Coal Creative in 2019 and as assistant to the chancellor's office at The Pennsylvania State University from 2018 to 2019, both of which aided her experience in communication and event planning.
Ms. Mohamed laid a strong foundation for her career achievements by earning a bachelor's degree in business, management, marketing and related support services from The Pennsylvania State University in 2019. To augment her knowledge and qualifications, she was certified in diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace by the University of South Florida Muma College of Business in 2021. Additionally, she has completed numerous leadership programs such as the Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) Program at The Pennsylvania State University, the Core Program at Leadership Northeast in 2022, the Business Leads Fellowship Program at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation in 2022 and the Northeastern Pennsylvania (NEPA) Workforce Leadership Academy at the Aspen Institute in 2023.
Known for her contributions as a civic-minded citizen, Ms. Mohamed serves on the NEPA Thrives steering committee for the Scranton Area Community Foundation. She is also a board member for Penn's Northeast, tecBridge, and Dress for Success Luzerne County. Her commitment to community service is further demonstrated through her volunteer work with organizations such as Penn State THON and various other nonprofits, shelters and kitchens throughout her community.
Ms. Mohamed's dedication to excellence was recognized in 2023 when she received the Freedom Fund Diversity Leadership Award from the NAACP Wilkes-Barre Branch #2306 and in 2024 when she received the Catch the Magic Education Community Champion Award. She has also garnered multiple accolades from Penn State Scranton—including the Chancellor's Scholar Award, the Academic Excellence Award and the Evan Pugh Scholar Award—as well as acceptance into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective all-discipline honor society recognizing and promoting academic excellence. Furthermore, she is recognized as a two-time fellow of Microsoft's TechSpark initiative for community engagement and ecosystem building, which works to create inclusive economic growth through AI and computer science education, digital skilling in workforce development, tech entrepreneurship and innovation, and digital nonprofit transformation. As the only fellow representing Pennsylvania among all 50 states and Mexico, she is making an impact with an international reach.
Born in New York City, Ms. Mohamed enjoys reading and traveling in her spare time. She attributes much of her success to her family's influence, particularly their strong work ethic instilled during her upbringing in a Guyanese immigrant household. In the coming years, she aspires to become a published author and establish herself as a professional public speaker. Through her TEDx talk endeavors, she aims to build a personal brand that further expands her presence within her field, setting a positive example for emerging professionals and young girls all over the world.
