For more than 50 years, Dr. Stillman has been a leading scholar in the history of Jews in the Islamic world.

JERUSALEM, ISRAEL, April 03, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Norman "Noam" A. Stillman, PhD, Schusterman-Josey professor emeritus of Judaic history with The University of Oklahoma and founding member of the Israel Institute, was selected by Marquis Who's Who for a prominent feature in the February 2025 edition of TIME magazine.

For more than 50 years, Dr. Stillman has been a leading scholar in the history of Jews in the Islamic world. His first two books, "The Jews of Arab Lands" and "The Jews of Arab Lands in Modern Times," remain in regular use in university programs around the world. Dr. Stillman also spent two years completing "Arab Dress: A Short History," the final work of his late wife and colleague, Dr. Yedida Kalfon Stillman. This labor of love has received an overwhelmingly positive response, including being translated into Arabic. Dr. Stillman is also the executive editor of the internationally award-winning "Encyclopedia of Jews in the Islamic World."

Building off that success, Dr. Stillman is recognized as the Schusterman-Josey Professor Emeritus of Judaic History at The University of Oklahoma, a role he has held since 1995. Prior to earning this distinction, he contributed for over 20 years as a professor at Binghamton University, teaching a range of subjects, including history, Arabic, and Near Eastern history, languages and cultures.

Dr. Stillman has made notable strides in sharing his knowledge with an ever wider range of individuals through his position as a founding member of the Israel Institute. Launched in 2012, the nonprofit works with academic institutions worldwide to enhance studies of modern Israel. Under Dr. Stillman's guidance, the organization has partnered with nearly 200 colleges, offering classes to more than 30,000 students. He recognizes the importance of education, as he considers his own teachers, from high school to higher education, to be the source of his success. He is currently chairman of the Academic Council of the Association for Study of the Middle East and Africa.

With that history in mind, Dr. Stillman has embraced the mentorship of the next generation. He has aided numerous students who have gone on to prominent roles, such as chair of the department of a leading university. Alongside continued mentoring, Dr. Stillman is committed to many noteworthy goals, including finishing his forthcoming book on North Africa. Even heading into his 80s, he feels excited and energized to continue contributing to his field.
